Hi everyone,

I've made my first ever GoPro Top Tip video which briefly demonstrates the benefit you can expect from adding a macro filter to your GoPro for close-range filming.

You will need a filter adapter (such as one from SRP) and of course the macro filter themselves. I found the Vivitar ones on Amazon for ~$10 and they come with a nice carrying case. They are also glass, not plastic.

Let me know what you think and if you have any ideas for future videos! I'm currently building an underwater GoPro rig and will post a video about it soon! :)

Nice video but these lenses behave so much differently in water that you will find air comparisons are functionally meaningless. And BTW, those are close-up lenses not macro filters.

I will hopefully give them a shot in the water soon. Need some video lights to arrive in the mail first! Also, I was under the impression that macro filters are another name for close-up lens/filters. Not to be confused with macro lens.

Like Flareside mentioned, their behavior UW is very different and muted. I started with that same Vivitar set but soon found it inadequate. The only way I was able to get really close up shots was with a +10 and +20 lens used solo or in stacked. They allow a narrow field of focus but very close to subject capability. Setting camera to narrow FOV is a must.

This is a video of my first tryout of the 3 +10 lenses stacked. I've since acquired a +20 lens. The compression that Vimeo's conversion applied doesn't do it justice. The original video is considerably sharper.

Yep I was at the bridge. Hope to be back soon when the water warms up a bit.

I picked up a +20 off brand macro filter and a deep sleeved +10 macro filter made by Sonia. I may still use one of the Vivitar +10 in the mix too. Basically I'll float between +20 and +30 mostly for the really close-up stuff. The deep sleeved +10 allows me to mount my +20 directly to it. I may pick up an additional +20 to have two pre-configured setups.
 
For single element diopters divide air power by 3
So lens with 10 is only 3.3 (useless as this is the same focus distance of the gopro)
Lens with 20 becomes 6.6 focus distance 15cm or 12 inches (OK results for most)
