Hey we have to go to vortex this month to certify some new students and I am looking to get your alls opinions on whats a good place to stay somewhere near here. We are willing to dive an hour or so to get to vortex so panama, or destin are both ok. Please let me know where you all think is a good place to stay nearby. We wanted to be able to go have a drink and have some fun after we finish with the days diving and also have some good food near by. Thanks :06:

I would stay in Panama City, if I were you. There are a thousand things to do. It's like a massive mile long boardwalk called "The Miracle Strip". Some very good restaurants and numerous watering holes. I's about an hour drive up to Vortex, maybe just a wee bit more.

We tend to stay at the Best Western Crossroads at De Funiak, which is less than an hour away from Vortex along Hwy 10. (Tel # 850- 892-5111). Ask them about the Diver's Rate.

McLean's Steak House is just down the road from the Best Western. It's not a bad place to get together after a dive, esp with the Seafood Buffet on Fri (or is it Sat?) night. They are pretty friendly & will put several tables together for bigger parties of people.

There are also a couple of local places in De Funiak, but their names escape me.

While it's true you can stay in Panama City is is about 1.5 hrs away from Vortex.

I don't know if you dive Vortex much, but after a full day's diving in the cooler spring waters I'm not too inclined to do much partying or travelling. ;)
