Hi all,

I am headed to Australia in late June. I would like to do some diving in the Great Barrier Reef, but also preferably stay on one of those island resorts I have heard so much about. Do you all have any suggestions on where the best diving is and which resorts to stay in? I have heard Fitzroy Island is nice, for example.

Where do you guys recommend?

Thanks for all your help, I know I'm not a frequent poster, but I do read these boards whenever I head out diving (which is not as much as I'd like).

I guess I should add that if there are better spots than the Great Barrier Reef I am open to that. I guess the ideal is a relaxing place that has great diving.

Some of the threads have mentioned whale sharks; I've always wanted to see one of those!

I have heard Lady Elliot Island is a nice resort type place with good diving - although fairly pricey. I am off to the GBR in July but if I had a bit more time/money I would have looked at Ningaloo a bit more seriously (which is where you get the Whale sharks).

Fitzroy has been totally renovated and has a variety of accommodation. Not amazing diving off of the island, but better trips available from the mainland (Cairns) to the Reef.

If you are looking for island diving Lady Elliott (as DanMont says) and heron are pretty good. I have heard Lady Musgrave is good, but no first hand experience.

June is whale migration season, o worth checking if any of the interaction activities are available (wont be on Fitzroy).

I dived Heron Island a couple of times almost 25 years ago. Some friends dived there last year. The diving was great and easy and my friends report the same still. Nice relaxed resort as well.

Thanks for the tips guys. Turns out the trip isn't going to happen, at least now. I am going to try and go in September or October however.
