I'm just wondering if there is any island resorts that offer both Whale shark diving and reef diving? That doesn't require long travel times, or is it better to stay down south first and then go to an island resort?

Also any dive shop recommandation would be appreciated. Thanks.

Have a look at Thatch Caye Resort, just off Dangriga. Lovely spot and meets your criteria. They have their own dive shop.

Thatch does wall dives throughout the South Water Caye Marine Reserve as well as Turneffe Elbow, Glovers, and even Lighthouse. They are the same distance to Gladdens Spit for the whale sharks as Placencia and they have three whale shark certified divemasters/instructors on staff, two of whom have been diving with whale sharks for several years and one who has been doing it for over twelve years (from before Gladdens Spit even became a marine park.) Thatch Caye Resort - A Handmade Resort off the coast of Belize

Tobacco Caye also has one operation that does whale shark dives and so does South Water Caye. Isla Marisol out at Glovers does the whale sharks as well and that is actually the closest operation to Gladdens Spit in nautical miles, although it is all deep open ocean to get there from Glovers Reef, so if it is rough, it may be a tough ride.

Said this before, I went out with Thatch Caye to do the whale sharks last year and loved every minute of it, diving nearby was stunning, place and people everything you could ask for and more......

Placencia is more or less within the same distance and time from Gladden Spit as many of the island resorts mentioned. However, the island resorts are closer to other excellent barrier reef, and atoll sites. There are advantages of being on the mainland as there is easier access to land adventures, and Placencia is indeed a quaint resort village with lots to do and has a great beach. There are (3) main independent dive shops here. Seahorse, Splash, and ourselves - Avadon Divers. If you do decide on a dive operation in Placencia, choose one with a large comfortable boat that makes riding to your dive sites a smooth ride. Splash is getting a larger boat - not sure of the type and length. Seahorse now has a 42-ft boat. Avadon has a
46-ft Newton Dive Special which is one of the most comfortable and spacious day boats you can find. Features are a fly bridge with plenty of seating, camera tables, camera rinse tanks, showers and a marine head.

me and 2 other divers are heading to Belize to dive with the whale sharks May 9-16 will let you know how it goes see info below.

May 9-16, Diver- $1100
7 nights garden view room at Laru Beya resort based on dbl occupancy, taxes, 5 days diving (2 days 2 tank reef dives and 3 days 2 tank whale shark dives) tanks, weights and belt, lunch and dive guide.

Lura Beya Resort and Seahorse Dive Center

]Laru Beya is an exclusive, midsize resort located on seven acres of lush gardens and beach front property on the Placencia Peninsula in southern Belize. At Laru Beya, which in the Garifuna language means "on the beach", you can enjoy your vacation lounging in a swinging hammock while listening to the beat of the waves rolling onto the beach. Laru Beya is also ideally located to facilitate your enjoyment of all that Belize has to offer - snorkeling, diving, fishing, river tours, rainforest trails, Mayan archaeology, and lots more.

Is that rate per person or for two people? If it is for two people and includes accomodations and two days doing two tank reef dives and three days of two tank whale shark dives, then it is very cheap. If it is a per person rate, then it is still reasonable for what you get.
