Upload 20,000 Images to Send One Clear Message“Give ‘Em the Fin” Crowdsource Mosaic Strives to Stop Shark Finning
Sharks are essential members of our ocean ecosystems. They cull sick fish before disease can sweep through entire fisheries. Without these apex predators, we will be faced with global collapse of our marine resources which will be devastating to the millions of families who depend upon the oceans as their primary food source.
Scientists estimate that over 100 million sharks are being killed each year. This is upsetting the balance of our oceans, and because some sharks do not start reproducing until they are over twenty years old, this insult will be slow to correct.
Most sharks are killed for the harvest of their fins. They are hauled aboard, their fins are hacked off and the living animal is thrown overboard. Unable to swim, it sinks to the ocean floor where it slowly dies. The fins are used as the principle ingredient in an ultra high priced soup that symbolizes success in many Asian cultures.
The Sea Save Foundation, ‘Give Em the Fin’ campaign give us the opportunity to begin conversations about this destructive practice. We need more people to understand the atrocities of finning and the downstream ramifications this practice will have on both our oceans, and worldwide hunger. This effort allows anyone with an Internet connection to participate, at no cost, and basically sign a global petition using their image as a signature.
Participation requires that you take a picture of yourself, a group, your pet holding your hand over your head, depicting a fin, and symbolizing shark support; be creative! The process is interactive and engaging. Add your image to the 20,000 image strong mosaic either by sending it as an attachment to GiveEmFin@seasave.org or by following the instructions on the mosaic page at http://TinyUrl.com/GiveEmFinhttp://TinyUrl.com/GiveEmFin
