Anyone ever been stationed at Gitmo or visited? I am supposed to be going there with my Guard unit and wanted to know what kind of diving they offered there if any i found the dive Club and there website but thats about it.

I was there about 3 years when I was younger. Some time around 89, before they evacted the base. Thats where I got my cert too. Awesome diving. Check out "the Slot" that spot was rad, my fav. Its just like a maze of coral, but you gotta clime a rope down. A big spot was Philips park. Midway was cool too. But remeber this was years ago for me, Im 26 now and was 13-14 when I was diving. Im sure its still as great as it ever was. As matter of fact I would love to go back just to dive. Have fun, GTMO is just what you make it.

John, one of the guys that I am serving with here in Iraq was stationed at GITMO right before he came here and said the diving was incredible. He was out diving nearly every weekend. I'll find out more specifics from him and get back with you.

I was station the with JTF 160. When i wasn't playing solider, i was diving. it was great, a lot to see and spear. really nice wall dive, i think it was called the slot. watch out for the Rum in the class six, it was really cheap.

There was a pretty decent artile in Scuba Diving magazine about diving at Gitmo, the local dive shop, and a spearfishing tourney that was going on. The author followed around a few military divers for several days and talked about life there and the diving.

See if you can pick up a back issue. It was sometime this summer.

According to this, it was in the August issue.

If you need me to as a last resort, I can find that issue and copy and fax
the article to you.
