getting from Caulker to San Ignacio - where to rent a car

I am very excited to be going to Belize from 8/27 through 9/5. We are going to Ambergris, Caulker and then San Ignacio. I want to rent a 4x4 in SI, but here's where I could use help.

Do we have to take a water taxi or flight from Caulker to Belize city, then go to SI from there? Or is it possible to bypass Belize City and still rent a 4X4 in SI?

Lastly - Does anyone have recommendations on where to rent from?

I don't know about renting a vehicle, but I expect it would be cheaper in Cayo than Belize City. There are direct flights from San Pedro to Belmopan twice a day (depending on demand) and I expect you could request the plane to pick you up on CC. You may be able to arrange your vehicle rental at Belmopan.
