I am enrolled for January 4th Nitrox class, and I am half way into the book.;)

The book says that diving with Nitrox reduces SI time ....

Does this also apply to " fly time " .... do you still have to wait 24 hours before flying ??

Thanks..;)

P.S. While I'm here .... Season's Greatings to everybody, and wishing all of you many safe dives in 2007 .....:14:

No-fly time is still 18hrs for repeat dives.

Sharktamer,

Seasons greetings to you too, and many happy dives in 2007! Sadly, Nitrox does not reduce time to fly. In theory it should, but in practice, it's just not worth risking a ride in the chamber.

well... there is a recommended 1 hour minimum surface interval ... so ...

i think it might be fairer to say that it gives you more dive time for a similar surface interval.

no .... you still should follow the minimum time-to-fly guideliness. DAN recommends the following:

# For a single no-decompression dive, a minimum preflight surface interval of 12 hours is suggested.

# For multiple dives per day or multiple days of diving, a minimum preflight surface interval of 18 hours is suggested.

Yes and no. You can calculate the time from your last dive until it's safe to ascent to 8000 feet. If you do so, your time to fly will be less than with air or you can simply wait the 24 hours before flying. I wait 24 hours.

Who has such a recommendation?

(we've been through this before)

my Nitrox materials from PADI

actually, now that you mention it, no, there really isn't

i do know that the UC Berkley diving program has a 1-hour minimum Nitrox surface interval as well .. but i never did follow the rationale

Good points, Walter and H2Andy.

For their rationale, and paraphrasing PADI’s manual: ~ “ . .recommend you do a surface interval of an hour or more between EANx dives, if possible, especially if you’re over 50% of the permissible oxygen exposure. This should further reduce the risk of oxygen toxicity.”
So it’s a recommendation for conservatism.

But their RDPs for EANx 32 and 36 use the same surface interval credit table as the air RDP, which includes very short surface intervals. So they seem to recognize that many of us often use shorter surface intervals.
