Hi,
I'm very new to diving, in fact I am only a few class dives from certification. I plan on buying my own gear and I'm wondering what people think of Genesis. My LDS supplies them, but can special order pretty much anything. Right now I'm interested in the Cobra 2 BC and GS2000 reg. My brother has a GS2000 and suggests I pick one up. My instructor uses the Cobra BC and recommends it as well. Basically I would like to get a weight intergrated BC, although I'm not sure if I will need to get the GS2000, seems a little fancy for a novice. My LDS quoted me around $1100 CDN (about $900 US) not including taxes (another 15%, yay Ontario). Thoughts/concerns?

Seems like your LDS is trying to make a profit, a big one...

I'm neither promoting nor condoning internet sales, but this is a good idea of the neighborhood that the price should be in..

I have a Genesis Phantom BC & like it, though I will admit that when I buy another I will be going to back inflate. Possibly a BC, more likely a backplate & wings.

Also take a look at www.scubatoys.com where you'll get a factory warranty on everything. With Leisurepro you won't.

oh my god, he's quoting me about twice as much. that's rather disturbing. thanks for the link, I can't believe it. I mean, I live about an hour north of Toronto, I'm not in a really secluded area or anything. It's actually a pretty reputable place, and my bro bought all his gear off him. I can't believe that though... man.

Anyhow, I do plan on trying it all out first, tonight actually. Thanks for the advice.

Just gave him the leisure pro link because it was an exact match to what he wanted. I'd pick scubatoys over leisurepro....

Well a LDS has to pay a lot more rent than an Internet shop, plus any returns you would have to pay shipping. Talk to your LDS and see if he'll give you a better deal.

See if you can rent them first and try them out before you buy.

This is a good idea for a lot of things. Before plunking down all your extra cash (and cash yet to be earned), first invest in a few dives while trying out different types of gear (BCs). When I went through my OW training, I made sure I used a different brand of BC for each pool session and each ocean dive. I was really only able to try four different brands, but when I was done I found there were some things I didn't like that I thought for sure I would have liked! But you have to have an open mind.

I won't bother telling you what I settled with, that's not the point. But some things to consider (in order of importance) are:

1. Fit and comfort
2. Availabilty of technical service (don't forget your annual maintenance)
3. Reliabilty
4. Cost

783. Whether or not it matches your other gear

For item number 3, places like ScubaBoard can be most helpful!

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I imagine LeisurePro's rent, with that shop in downtown Manhattan, is virtually nil!

Also, I'm willing to bet that silly giant store Scubatoys built in Dallas was basically free. The bank probably said "What?? You have an Internet store? Here, have this pesky building we've been trying to get rid of!"

Two quick thoughts. First, a grand for a BC is insane, in anyone's currency. Second, some LDS owner's become irrationally upset when some noob walks in and informs them <as if they didn't know> that Product X can be acquired much less expensively on the internet.

That doesn't mean don't discuss the issue with your LDS owner.

It means be prepared for angst and drama, emotional diatribes and windbaggery about how you're taking food out of his mouth, etc. etc. It all gets tiresome.

Things conceivably, however, could get to a point where you're more or less forced to tell him to pack sand up his arse. This could adversely impact your OW certification. :)

You might want to get the OW certification FIRST, and discuss the economic ramifications of internet marketing SECOND.

Just a thought... YMMV.
