I'm looking at picking up some new gear for an upcoming trip. Any advantages to waiting until i'm in BKK or Phuket to buy, price wise?

Mainly it will depend on what you're looking for in terms of both items and brands. Quite a lot of gear is less expensive in the US, but you can get very reasonably-priced custom-made wetsuits here. If you do end up waiting until you get here to buy make sure to get a VAT tax rebate form from the vendor. That will save you 7% based on your purchase price.

Dave,

IMO, no! Scuba Toys, Leisure Pro for example will save you a ton of money. If you have return issues it will a be a lot easier for you as well, as you live in the US. You can buy a cheap rolling duffel bag at Walmart to carry your gear. If you can't dive before you get here, at least try your fins, mask/snorkel in a pool.

Shops are worth a look in Thailand as you may find a few items to round out your kit not available locally.

Safe diving,

Arizona

It really depends on what you're looking for. BCD's and reg e.g. are about the same price. But with the present exchange rates, they will be a bit cheaper in the US. Masks, fins, wetsuits etc. will normally be cheaper here for the locally made brands. The ones made aborad: same as for regs/BCD's.
