I can't believe it happened again. I forgot to load my BC and REG. This sounds crazy but sometimes we get distracted. I dive with my wife at times and this is when I have been absent minded and forgotten some type of gear. I don't use a gear check list so I rely solely on my memory.

It was completely laughable. We were able get out of the house in good time for optimal tide conditions. I was even really lucky in terms of PRIMO parking. As we were getting our wet suits on I said to her."Hey hone where's my BC". Then she said, I think you left "YOUR" BC along with "YOUR " reg along with "YOUR" brain back at the house. Wow

!!!

Well that's it! Now I am making a gear check list for the both of us. I hope to use this before I leave the house.

My question is has anyone ever suffered from gear forgetfull syndrome? Or is this a unique condition that only happens to new divers.

Do guys use a check list before you leave the house or is this something only newer divers need?

Head to toe mental check before I leave the house....

I put everything in the same place at home for packing for the next car shore dive, and for long trips just make sure I have everything. No list needed. But, I have on occasion forgotten to do something while gearing up at the car (no air? weight belt not ON!!!??). This may happen when I get distracted talking to somebody. Last week I thought I had misplaced my gloves during helping a couple of students gear up. Maybe when diving on my own I'm more slack? I also don't at all like conversing while trying to write a cheque (check). Creature of habit. Who writes a cheque today anyway?

For a dive I use a memorized checklist triggered by my personal nonsense phrase: “following my backward ways rarely bodes good will”, with each starting letter representing something. e.g. Following = F = Fins. It is in the order in which I pack my boat bag, which is roughly the reverse order in which I kit up.

For a trip I use a detailed written checklist which includes lots more stuff like money, c-card, clothes, save-a-dive kit etc. etc.

Sme people have the same problem with hockey gear. My team has a person who forgets something every week. No sympathy anymore. My scuba and hockey gear goes back in the bag ASAP. No need for a check list. Yes it often smells bad. But I have it when I need it.

I forget my jersey from time to time, which sucks as a goalie!! I try to keep a blank spare in my gear bag just in case I have a brain fart.

As far as scuba gear, I rarely forget anything major, because I use a checklist to assemble my rebreather. I did leave my tools on my dining room table last week, so I didn't have a few odds & ends in Bonaire. Luckily there are plenty of other divers to help :)

I've never forgotten anything important going on a dive vacation. However, I did once leave my O2 analyzer in the BVIs. The dive shop was happy to ship it back to me (at my expense, of course).

When I take out my dive gear for packing, I do it while visualizing kitting up and doing a buddy check. There's only one time I've forgotten something important (my weight belt), but I tend to forget less imporant stuff. Like a handkerchief to dry my hair after the dive, or the waterproof bag I stuff my car keys & topside camera in on the boat, but that's no biggie.

That visualization thing works great for day trips; for weekend trips I have a written checklist on my phone.

For some time it was quite difficult to remember all pieces of gear, but then I noticed a moment, where packing became quick and easy. It was when I started to dive more regularly - couple of times a week instead of once every couple of months. It is helpful to have a routine where to dry and store the gear in "groups" - wet/dry/soft. I store everything I need in two plastic boxes and a mesh bag. When going to dive I just put these in the trunk - it takes 10 minutes. When I come back, everything that needs drying goes to a pre-arranged place to dry and then back into the respective box. Problems occur when I have to do it in a strange place, not at home.
