Has anyone experienced diving in the Far Northern GBR ?

I mean beyond the normal 3-7 day Cairns or Port Douglas Liveaboards up towards cooktown.

We are particularly interested in the Nimrod Explorer 11 day northern trips or similar.

Very grateful for any information

Hullo, DSF:

We did the 7-day trip on the Nimrod Explorer last year and did the ribbons and Osprey Reef so didn't go north. As far as the boat goes, it was a great experience! We'd do it again in a heartbeat!

Go get wet!

Thanks Craigus

We did the normal 4 day trip ourselves so I totally agree with you it is a great boat and also far better value for money than anything I have encountered in the world.

The 11day Northern trips are comparitively much more expensive so I am guessing that the diving must be out of this world, but I'd like to confirm with someone who has been there before forking out.

Personally I went on the Mike Ball SuperSport and I must say it was a fantastic boat and crew. They thought of everything.

From mints on your turned down beds .. to .. warm towels after each dive .. to .. 5m bar with gas and regulator for safety stops.

I would dive with them again any time - next might do PNG instead.

THe best GBR trips are the ones that go out as far as possible, beatifu clear unspoilt waters, pristine reefs etc. Australia is one of the few countries that actively preserves their reefs for overfishing etc and the diving is amazing. The cost is more is bot h time andmoney but i have been out there and will be again!

Hi there,

Try the Undersea Explorere from Port Douglas, they do a fantastic Far Northern trip twice a year

by the way you can win an UEx trip on this site (see above) - check it out!

See you all underwater ....

Tim :) :) :)

While we were on "Diversity", I asked the question, " how come there aren't more liveaboards that go beyond the Ribbons and farther north up to the Torres Staights?" the answer, according to the captain was that there have been boats that were doing trips up there but that after a short amount of time that the boats were beaten up so bad by the rough water that it isn't currently feasible to have a liveaboard consistantly above Cooktown. There are boats that are available but only for a short season.
I will tell you Osprey, Shark, and the northern Ribbons were worth doing, but I imagine that the Far Northern Reefs are awesome.
Dive Safe,
Caymaniac :)
