I've made a lot of deep dives that involved multiple thermoclines. This morning, Merry and I made a shallow dive at the crane off Haggerty's. While descending, I felt a quick drop in temperature at twelve feet, then another one at twenty feet. The surface temperature was unusual for Palos Verdes at 72°. At fifty-three feet is was 59°. Our dive was at low tide and the poor visibility reflected that fact. We had eight to ten feet of vis, improving only slightly near the end of the dive.

The highlight of the dive was a school of Black Croakers, Cheilotrema saturnum that didn't mind our presence. They came within a foot of me several times, often surrounding me. They usually swim away if I look at them.

Same situation at La Jolla Shores.. 72.. tell about 25' then a cool by quite a few degrees. Also a large.. 1000+ school of what I would guess would be the same silver fish. "Could they be queen fish".. swimming at about 8' depth.

I just encountered a pretty dramatic thermocline at Vet's Park. It was 75 at the surface, maybe dropping 1 or 2 degrees before 37 feet, at which point it was suddenly in the mid-60s, getting down to 57 by 80 feet. I'm sure the lake divers would snicker but I've never felt anything like it.
