Alexey Stepanenko for Diving in Schelkovo

Today is a rainy day in the life of the LDS ...
We have repeatedly accepted freedivers from us, but today ...
Alexey Galushko and his friend were going to dive under the ice like freedivers. Dressed up, sat on the edge of the lane and asked Michael to bring them more boiling water in a thermos. When Michael returned to the lane, Alexei was not there. His friend said that he dived to “look” ... Near the lane, safety ends were prepared, the guys had to get in touch with them and dive in turn, insured from the surface by Mikhail.
Alexey did not find a way out into the lane ...
Searches lasted 40 minutes. Resuscitation procedures did not give a result.

Alexey died in a specially equipped diving pond in Fryazino, yes, he did not get insurance, but he died under a frozen, uncleaned lane with signal lights on, which is equipped in case the diver lost orientation under the ice. Unfortunately, before diving, he did not check it, trusting in the professionalism of the staff of the diving club. It cost him his life.

Is this freediving under under ice a sport in Russia? I have not heard of this before.

SeaRat

not as official discipline, as I know. But Ice freediving exists here. As many others diving disciplines it is safe enough, if it fits reasonable safety.
e.g. Alexey Molchanov`s World Guiness Record in this february:
select "subtitles" and english translation

"he did not get insurance" actually means he didn't use safety line
