My husband and I went to the Cocos Islands on the Okeanos Explorer. The amount of fish life, the hammerheads, breaching baby mantas (we didn't know they did that), a very close and wonderful encounter with a whale shark and even the red-lipped batfish were unforgettable. It was hard, current-filled diving from pangas. Water temp varied (upper 70's to the low 60's) and currents often ripped. We had reef hooks to help us hold on to the rocks that were often covered in barnacles. Everyone was required to wear a transponder (supplied by the boat). Are diving conditions in the Galapagos similar to Cocos? We are going on the Humboldt Explorer in the enar future and I wanted to level-set my diving expectations. My husband and I are veterans of 900+ dives in Australia, Pacific, Hawaii, Bahamas and Caribbean over the past 20+ years so we are not novices. Any and all comments and insights are appreciated.

My wife and I have been to both the Cocos and Galapagos. The diving in Galapagos was a bit more challenging, harder currents and faster descents to get behind rocks. Sounds like you have good experience for the trip. I always dove with a halcyon raft and nowadays I'd take a Nautilus life line as well.
We were on a live aboard for both trips and definitely loved getting out to wolf and darwin islands...they were the highlights of the trip!

we were on the humboldt explorer a couple of years ago and our group included several who'd been in coco's the year before. all agreed it was a bit more challenging but worth it ! its all the luck of the draw but wolf and darwin are other worldly, where else might you see orca's hunting hammerheads? none of us will ever forget that trip.

Wow, I was in the Galapagos in July 2010 and didn't think it was that bad. Water was a little warmer and sure there were currents and getting back into the pangas could be a challenge, but I didn't think it was like what you described.

I could also just be remembering how awesome my trip was and kinda blanked out the challenges. I do think you are very well prepared.

Have fun!
