Wolf and Darwin Islands in August
The Wolf and Darwin Islands, located in the northern Galápagos, are famous for their incredible marine biodiversity. In August, ocean conditions and marine life sightings are influenced by the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Humboldt Current, which attract a huge variety of marine species.
Marine life sightings in August

Whale sharks – August is peak season for these gentle giants, especially large, pregnant females.

Scalloped hammerhead sharks – Massive schools gather around Wolf and Darwin.

Galápagos sharks – Frequently spotted patrolling the reefs.

Silky sharks – Often encountered in open waters.

Giant mantas and mobulas – Sometimes seen gliding in the currents.

Dolphins – Commonly spotted near the islands.

Galápagos sea lions and fur seals – Possible playful encounters.

Tunas and jacks – Very active due to the increase in nutrients brought by the currents.

Marine iguanas and sea turtles – Occasionally seen in the area.
Ocean conditions in August

Water temperature: 18-24°C (64-75°F) due to the cold Humboldt Current. A 7mm wetsuit is recommended.
👁 Visibility: Generally 20 meters (65-80 feet), but can vary with plankton presence (which attracts megafauna, so it’s a bonus!).

Currents: Moderate to strong, bringing large pelagic species (the big guys!).
Special currents affecting the region in August

Humboldt Current (cold): Predominant, bringing nutrient-rich waters and increasing marine activity.

Equatorial Countercurrent (pockets of warm water): May mix with the colder Humboldt waters, sometimes improving visibility.

Upwellings: Create a food-rich environment for large marine animals.
