Hi

As I have been reading the past 11 pages of this forum, I realised that there are many G9 users out there.

Previously I was using a S1 but unfortunately, it got lost. Now I am looking for a replacement and from reading this site, G9 obviously stands out.

Could the G9 or S1 users in this forum, please advise me the reasons for selecting one over the other (in the context of using it as an underwater photography).

Thank you.

I recently purchased a G9 and housed it for underwater use within a Patima Housing with my dual Inon Z-240 Strobes and Inon Wet Lenses. I did a bit of research, and here's why I selected the G9:

G9 vs S5

- The G9 shoots at 12.1 megapixels, as compared to the S5's, which shoots at 8 megapixels.

- The G9 has a 3" 230K pixel LCD, as compared to the S5, which has a 2.5" 207K pixel LCD.

- The G9 shoots in RAW, as compared to the S5, which does not appear to shoot RAW.

- Besides all the standard shooting modes, the G9 has two custom settings, as compared to the S5, which does not appear to offer any custom settings.

- The G9 records movies in 1024 x 768 resulution, as compared to the S5, which records movies in 640 x 480 resolution.

- For underwater use, the G9 has 4 housing options (Canon, Ikelite, Patima and Ses & Sea), but the S5 only appears to have 1 option (Ikelite).

- The S5 does use AA's, which is a nice feature, because with NiMH's it can give you more shots per charge then the G9 offers. Also, the S5 has a more powerful lens, offering 36 - 432mm equivalent, as compared to the G9's 35 - 210 equivalent. Both of these features are nice, but they were still not enough to make me select the S5 over the G9.

So far, I've been very happy with the performance of my G9, but I'm still learning to maximize it's shooting capabilities. I'm going on a 7 day livaboard in the Bahamas at the beginning of September, so I'm looking forward to really taking a lot of pictures there in clear blue waters, so that should really show me what the G9 can do.

Hope this helped!

Adrian
