Right now i am looking to upgrade from a crappy sony to a Canon. I was planning on the G9 but now that the G10 is out im not sure what to do. I know the lenses are different but im not sure which is better for diving. Thanks

I was in the same position. I was presented a deal on a G9 and decided to take it, mainly because I couldn't get comfirmation that an external WA lens would be available for the G10. Yes the native lens at 28 mm for the G10 is wider than the 35 mm lens of the G9. But it's my understanding that the G10 28 mm lens is not as wide as the G9 with the external wet WA lens. Since one of my big reasons for wanting to upgrade was wide angle that's why I went with G9. Of course it means I also need to get a housing other than Canon, like Ikelite or Patima.

I heard a professional UW photographer, Mark Strickland, speak last week. He said something like "find a system you like, learn to use it, then quit looking at other newer systems, or you will just drive yourself crazy and broke forever upgrading". I know almost everyone with a G9 is happy with it and the various lens options available, so I decided to go that route. Otherwise I still think it's wait and see what comes out for the G10 in housings (other than Canon) and lens options.

Keep in mind that more megapixels is not always better. The G9 is 12.1 the G10 14.7Mpix. More means smaller pixels, thus less light per pixel, and the G9 pixel is already pretty small. Did some low light tests with my G9 and was not impressed, works fine if you can get a lot of light, otherwise...

Don't get me wrong, love the camera. But you must know the limitations.

I'm a firm believer that you can take award winning photos with ANY camera, now that does not mean you can take award winning photos in every situation BUT if you learn a cameras limitations and work within them you can do well..

I use the G9, I'm sure the G10 would be great as well but I'll also bet any real differences will be canceled out by users skill..

Yeah G9 sucks in low light, but is great with a strobe (or two)

Davis Hass made this comment over on Wetpixel regarding the G9 vs G10:

I also think my main point was missed about people wanting super wide lenses yet very, very few UW photographers use them effectively. So as stated, I'd be happy with a true 28mm on any Canon G10 I take beneath the waves.......

By true 28mm he means putting it behind a dome port rather than a flat port.
