Hey All,

Does anyone have experience using an Ikelite housing with the 9306.35 wide angle port with 67mm threads, with both a wide angle wet lens and something like the subsee/inon diopters?

I understand that the 9306.35 limits your zoom, but I have found very few situations that called for me to zoom all the way in using my Canon sd550 (will be upgrading to a g15 within the week, just waiting for boxes to arrive), I guess my concern is, does the lens actually bump up against the port at full zoom, or are the optics just severely degraded at full zoom? and if there is potential physical contact, how dangerous is this to the camera (IE if my wife were too... ;c)).

If anyone can comment on this I would appreciate it, as I am not sure I would purchase the port if it limits me to just wide angle.

If you're really into wide-angle then I really don't think the G12/G15 is the right camera for you. Ikelite does make a domed port for that housing but it only gets you to something like 35 degrees. That's more like "Mid-angle" than it is wide-angle.

The G series Canons are much more suited to macro.

Ikelite port adapter reduces some of the zoom so that the lens can sit closer
There are situations in macro where you would be at full zoom
In any case I would consider the standard canon housing with Inon wide angle unless you want a wired TTL strobe

Not really into wide angle, more of interested in having the option if manta's, tiger/whitetip, schools of fish or turtles wander by (or wrecks). Really just wanted to know what you can zoom to with the wide angle port, basically if the port allows for zoom all the way to 85mm (or even better 100mm) I think it will be fine for the macro I want to do. I have emails in to a couple of places to check, but figured someone must have one by now :)

If you are interested taking pictures of whole wreck is better to consider another camera to be safe as there is a good probability that even the widest wide angle for the G15 will not be so wide

even the widest wide angle for the G15 will not be so wide

It won't. It'll be wide-angleish at best. The lens pulls back when it goes wide so this really reduces how much it can "see" in side a domed housing.

Well I am very pleased with some samples I was given of the wide angle port, for a compact, while I concede there are better cameras out there for wide angle, and likely better housings for the g15, for those of us that are canon loyal, it appears the wide angle port on the ike housing will make this a very flexible rig. The one major downside will be really shy subjects that do not want you getting within 6-10 inches, where the full 140mm zoom would be helpfull.

For anyone interested you can zoom to 85mm without touching the port (9306.35), sadly you cannot reach 100mm (the last "close focus" dustance (i believe appx 4.9 inches) before the zoom really pushes you away from your subject). You can achieve this zoom safely inside the wide angle port by setting the front dial in P mode to zoom, the steps are 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm and 140mm (the 100 and 140mm both would hit the front of the port) and then switching back to M or your preferred mode.

Charles--The G15 lens actually retracts from 28mm to 35mm, so at its widest it is not all the way pulled back, at 28mm I guess you would be right around 1/4 inch of the front of the ikelite wide angle port

I wonder if the Inon UWL-S100-ZM80 would work with the standard port on the ike housing...

Well if you need to zoom to 80mm you would be better with the WA port no? this would put you really close to the port lens

maybe but the lens is designed to be used at 80mm zoom...i like it with the canon housing.
