After some extensive SB reading I decided to purchase the G11 with canon housing and YS110a strobe and I would like to get a starting point with this combination. I think I want to use f/o TTL mode to start out with and I would like to store some settings in C1 for ease of recalling of the settings. To begin with I believe I need to be in TV or AV to use the TTL feature. Do I use force flash and set the output to minimum to conserve battery or does this defeat the TTL feature? Or keep the flash at auto? I have set WB to underwater, ASA 100, red eye off, internal focus lamp off. Also what are the advantages of shooting TV mode versus AV mode? Are there other settings that I should consider to save in C1? Thanks in advance!

Congrats on your new camera & strobe, I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Forced flash, definitely. WB - when using a flash, use Auto, not underwater (unless you want red photos!). You are correct, TTL won't work in manual mode, only P,Av,Tv. Av allows you to control your aperture (& depth of field), Tv will control your shutter speed, which will can freeze motion if the shutter speed is high enough. I usually use Av for close-up shots, at F8 to block out unwanted ambient light. Manual mode is ideal, but you'll need to set your strobe power manually.

Also, take a look at this beginner's underwater photography page, it could be helpful.

hope this helps,
Scott
