Greetings. I'm considering getting a G11. (Had an SD 960 and Canon housing and loved it, but sold it.) Since I've got a Sea and Sea YS-110alpha strobe, I'm not inclined to get an Ikelite housing because I've been told for the TTL it's necessary to use Ikelite strobes.
I want to use the TTL option the G11 hot shoe offers. I like the Fisheye Fix for the G 11, but I don't think it offers a hot shoe connection. (Can't find confirmation of hot shoe or no hot shoe.) Which housing would you recommend?
Any information/opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I use the Ikelite housing. It comes with the connection for the strobes already. It is just that for it to work as TTL, you have to use an Ikelite strobe. I use the Ikelite DS51 strobe and it is quite functional.

I understand that since you have the Sea and Sea strobe, you will have to have some sort of adaptor to get the TTL capacity with the Ikelite case.

I have heard of the Fisheye Fix and it looks like an excellent housing. I think they have a number of wide angle lens add ons that would be quite attractive. The Fix housing is quite a bit more expensive than the Ikelite housing. But it does make for a more capable system. I do not know if it is TTL. I think I read some where that most of the advanced housings have adaptors which allow TTL capacity... they just cost more. I think the Ikelite housing may have workarounds for other strobes, they just cost more. But I do not know for sure.

Backscatter is a retailer who sells Ikelite housings and Fix housings for the G11. They seem to be quite knowledgeable (at least from their web site). You might give them a call and see what they say about the systems.

I took the Ikelite housing and the G11 and dove the Florida Keys. The camera and housing worked very well and I got some nice photos on my first trips. In looking at my photos, I can see ways in which I can make significant improvements. But I have shared the photos with friends who were extremely impressed.

mybluelife,

Would you spend $1000. on a housing for the G11 that does not have true TTL?

From what I see on the internet the FIX housing does not have hard-wire (true) TTL capability. It has a compatible connection on the exterior flash window for Inon and Sea & Sea strobes via a fiber optic connection (not true TTL as with a hard wire).

Yes, the FIX housing is better built than the Canon housing (cost = about $200.) but you have to use a fiber optic strobe connection on both of them.

The FIX housing has wide angle lens attachment capability and the Canon housing does not for the most part. The Canon housing does have a macro lens adapter.

It's your money.

Hey Gilligan. No, I'm not keen on spending a grand on a housing without TTL. I just couldn't find any references to it in any of the online reviews I've read regarding the Fisheye Fix. If I get the G11, I want to make use of that hot shoe. I'm not a big fan of Ikelite housings, and would prefer something with a better design, such as the Fisheye. Do you know of any other housings like it that do have TTL?
Thanks.

The Patima has a hot shoe. I would rather have a sTTL strobe and optical connectors.

As Nemrod stated Patima makes one that has a hard wire connector and is also in the $1000. price range.

Looks like HerraduraDivers here on the board has one. Check this post. He posted info there about the hard wire connection but he also stated he is using a fiber optic cable with his strobe and housing.

I have the patima housing for my G11 and its a nice piece of engineering. Am yet to get it wet as of yet as the weather held us up this morning. Im running an Inon S2000 with optical connection and it works great. The housing comes with 2 ports, a standard port and another port with a M67mm thread for attaching wide angle and macro ports but it does suffer from vignetting. But if also has a zoom lock on the zoom so when you attach the wide angle wet lense you cannot zoom the lense.

Cheers Joel

A few pics of my setup.
