I currently have a Sea and Sea Dx1g and was considering going with the G10. Can anyone please tell me would this be a good move? Also any opinions on the G10 would be appreciated. How is it in the RAW mode? What is the refresh time in RAW?

Thanks,

Sean

Here's a good "but quick and brief" review: Underwater Camera Articles: Review: Best Underwater Point & Shoot Cameras for 2009

I'm not much of a photographer "yet, just ordered the G10/Ikelite housing" but from what I've seen from examples of the Dx1g and the G10, they both put out some incredible images. On paper the G10 might have better specs, but I don't think they warrant the upgrade cost. "again this is coming from a laymen"

That G10 sure sounds nice

The features I like on the DX1G over the G10 is that I can change lenses underwater. The ability to shoot wide angle and macro is a major concern, as the water I dive in is not always clear enough to warrant w/a.

If you use the Ikelite housing with the G10 you can remove or add the WD-4 Wide Angle lens underwater "28mm angle of coverage", effectively allowing you to shoot WA or Macro.

If you use the Canon OEM housing, there is no wide angle option but only macro lenses that can be added.

My favorite Hermi Nudibranch Picture of all time. Shot by MaxBottomTime "presumably with the DX1G" It inspired me to dump more then a thousand dollars on a camera:

Actually, that was with my first camera, a Samsung V5 using my dive light for a strobe. I had to hold my place with my legs, use one hand for the camera and one for the light. That was the luckiest shot I ever got as far as anything worth posting. the camera and housing cost less than $500, but it served me well for a couple of years.

Check out Canon PowerShot G10 digital camera specifications: Digital Photography Review.

Looks like one of the best compact UW cameras from my perspective. Feature rich, RAW, good zoom range, 28mm WA, macro, etc.

The only downside is you can purchase a DSLR body for very close to the cost of this camera. But then you have to purchase lenses AND one can NOT get an UW housing for any DSLR for under $300 that I am aware of.

you can pick up samsung V5 and housing for under $200.. Frank, sounds like you spent $800 too much! lol

Max's photo is beautiful. but it's nothing about the camera he used, it's about the lighting and composition.

ps - I would call the ikelite WA lens that restores 28mm "barely" wide angle, if that.

Sounds like I did;) But hey the G10 will grow with me and by the time I'm done getting a couple strobes and additional lenses, it will be quite the system.

I agree that the WA lens is barely wide angle, but I'm really only interested in macro and wide angle is an afterthought for me "so just 28mm will be fine". My main reason for buying the Ikelite housing v.s. the Canon's OEM is for the TTL use and its ruggedness.
