Hi

I read somewhere that when shooting Av, the camera automatically defaults to 1/60.
Does anyone know if this is true?

I want to shoot F8 and 1/500 most of the time since I mainly shoot supermacro so does that mean my only option is to shoot Manual only?

Also, I can't figure out where the setting is for me to shoot RAW only. When I go into the menu, the only option is RAW+L: on or off. My picture counter doesn't change for either setting however.... any info about this?

thanks

That is correct. I tried using AV, didn't like the limitations and now shoot Manual only.

Correct. Shooting manual is very easy once you get a little experience you will know before-hand what slight adjustments to storbe power or shutter speed may be required based upon the subject.

Within the main menu you found the "RAW+L" option. Turn it off. Exit menu. Hit the middle 'Set' button to bring up the secondary settings control. Cursor down to the control for JPG size/RAW. Choose the RAW setting. Your camera will be shooting RAW only. I never noticed that the picture counter doesn't change.

It's the same on the G11 :banghead:
Shooting manual or a housing/strobe with a electrical cable will do the trick...

Sometimes my "stupidity" amazes me! After posting I simply got out my camera, set to the various modes and depressed the focus/shoot button halfway and got the readings. :dork2:

Both Av and Tv do have preset defaults for speed and f-stop.

Did go in and set a shortcut for WB. Now I am deciding if I should go in and set up C1 for macro and C2 for WA.... as soon as I figure out how to set the custom preferences. :D

Did figure out how to get it to shoot just RAW... since I have always set it to L and S, I never previewed all the different settings for quality under functions.

Think I will keep it at RAW+L for this coming trip and them move to just RAW after I get used to working with lightroom2. Bought a netbook to take with me and only think I will only put lightroom2 on it.... and keep cs3 on my other notebook for now.

I configure C1 for when I'm shooting with just the normal flat port (wide angle/fish portraits/etc). It is set to 'M' mode, 'landscape' focus, f5.6 and 1/125 sec.

User mode C2 is for when I have one of my wetmate macro adapters on (either Inon UCL-165 or FIX double flippy macro lens) and is configured to zoom about 2/3 of the way in to avoid vignetting, 'M' mode, and f7.1 and 1/200 sec. When shooting macro I prefer NOT to zoom in all the way because 1) The minimum focal distance goes way up 2) It's harder to avoid camera shake issues when zoomed all the way in.

When I have the FIX Fisheye glass dome port on I usually stay in C1 mode and just try to remember to switch from landscape focus mode to macro focus mode (to focus on the virtual image created by the glass dome).

The single most important setting I have found is the enable the 'focus zoom' feature to let you clearly know the camera has achieved autofocus focus lock.

Didn't think that you can custom set the zoom position. I usually keep the lens about halfway and the just zoom in or out depending on what I'm shooting.... when not shooting macro.

When I shoot with the subsee +10 I keep the lens zoomed almost all the way and then I move back as needed to get the focus.

When you talk about autofocus lock are you referring to the menu setting that magnifies the center spot when the focus locks in correctly? I personally don't like using it all that much as I feel it delays the picture review after taking the shot. I tried it out for a few dives but found it starting to annoy me. To each his own. :-)

I'm talking about the autofocus zoom "AF-Point Zoom" setting when you depress the shutter halfway and it achieves a focus lock and then shows the zoom in the center. This doesn't appear to have any affect on the the picture review after taking the picture. What I found was that I was taking some pictures even though it wasn't able to achieve focus lock. This setting has nothing to do with the "Review" number of seconds (off, 2-10 secs, hold) or "Review Info" (off, detailed, focus check) after a photo is taken.

Actually that was what I thought you were referring to. What I meant to say was that when shooting macro, I liked using it but when I wasn't shooting macro, I found it annoying (seemed to throw my composition off). When you depress the button halfway, the center square turns green when the shot is focused and doesn't throw my composition off.

Too bad there's no shortcut to turn it off and on.... unless there's someway I can add that to a custom setting for when I shoot macro. Hmmmm....

Most of the menu settings items can be set differently by the two custom configuration settings groups. "AF-Point Zoom" is definitely configurable between C1 and C2. As you noted the 'AF-Point Zoom" is mostly useful for macro which is where I have it enabled in my C2 settings.

Can you give me a quick walk thru on how to set up C1 and C2. I want to set one for macro and the other for WA.
