So I finally had a chance to dive with the G10 BigEye. It was a great day of diving so I actually didn't focus as much on photography as I should have to give the new lens a proper test.

Biggest thing I noticed is there is A LOT of flare/reflection on the edges from the glass. Anyone else notice this with their BigEye?

Since you shoot with the Macro mode on, you can focus actually closer than the glass dome, so often I would find that I was actually touching my subject trying to get closer.

It seems to be pretty handy for a wide/medium wide G10 Canon housing solution if I can get those flare/reflections in check.

Great shots! What dive spots were you at?

Casino Point, Catalina. Always a great spot, but this day it was particularly great. Tons of fish life, good viz, harbor seal and a huge Giant Black Sea Bass (which of course I didn't get a shot of)!

Beautiful! Especially the fish (2nd photo) & the seal.

Very nice... looking forward to getting mine...Love that area, by the way..

I really do like this camera. And the Canon housing is more than acceptable, but I got to admit I am thinking about burning a hole in the credit card and buying the FIX housing with the super wide lens...!!!

Just need to decide if I want to keep shooting with the p&s or jump up to a dslr in the next few years...

The issue is a bit more complex with a G10... from an absolute resolution point of view, if you shoot in the very narrow range of "ideal" setting with a G10, most DSLR are not as good. A 50D is only equal to it, not better. You have to go to a full frame DSLR to actually do better...

The above campares the resolution of the new Canon 500D versus the G10...

If you are doing macro... with strobes, then the combination of close macro and zoom is not even available with a DSLR.

On the other hand, the performance of the G10 falls apart if you move very far from "ideal"...and there are a huge assortment of lens for a DSLR.. if you have a specific type of picture you are taking (outside of macro)..

I can only print up to 13 x 19 inches... and at that point, the G10 is still razor sharp.

Just got my bigeye.. thanks Jack.... will use this coming weekend...

Oh Lens flare.. I would expect that would be a major issue with any dome lens.. I get it sometimes with the flat port, if the sun is in the wrong direction...

This image, if you look closely, has that issue on the fish:

and I am just using the normal case.
