Hi all:
I usually dive with my 5050, ikelite case, or 5060, PT-020 case. I just picked up a canon g 10, canon uw case to add to my choices - could someone tell me the settings they use for close ups and available lite. No strobe except camera flash. I was going to try to convert my 5050 settings to G 10. Thought I would ask. Heading to Kona for a month starting saturday.

The G10 is a complex camera.... at it's best, image quality can be as good as most dslr's... at high ISO, it can take terrible pictures.

Ideally, you will not be shooting in low light.

What I would suggest, if you are going to use without a flash, is to use the lowest ISO you can, hopefully below 400... and if shallow and sunny, use 100.

Not a fan of auto... really not a fan of jpg's... I hope you got the software, so you can shoot raw images.

Try this...

1. Use program mode

2. There is a setting that magnifies the center of the screen when in focus.. turn that on.

3. Learn how to use manual white balance... and set it under water... or if shallow, use the underwater setting.

4. Use macro...for close up, but zoom out at least 50% so you don't have to be too close.

5. Set the focus on spot...and then be careful that you are focusing on what you want.. not the background.

6. If you use the flash, just use it for fill...but if you turn it on and everything is over exposed..

7. Go to Tv (shutter priority) and set it to at least 1/250...you can still use the flash, but it will greatly reduce the motion blur, if you have enough light.

8. If you use program and flash, with a 1/60, you have to have the anti-shake on and hold the camera very still.

9. Set exposure to spot or center weighted... just be aware of how it is set and the results you get.

10. Always remember, a little underexposed can be fixed, over exposed cannot.

Great camera by the way...capable of great UW images.

Puffer Fish.....

Thanks..........

Is this the same for the S90?

A little different with the S90. First, you have a fair amount more ISO range to use, and you have that F2 (when wide open).... also the zoom range is less...

As I have strobes... I use shutter priority set to 1/500, and I have to zoom out to almost the complete range.

My avatar was shot with a S90, here is a G10 image:

Shutter lag seems to be a big deal for a lot of people... to get the above shot, I prefocused (half shutter push) on something the correct distance away, and then waited for the fish to get into range... takes a bit of practice to get the exposure and the focus correct.
