I've decided to try to learn the frog kick (watched some videos) but am having some trouble. When I do the power stroke (bringing my fins together and angled inward) I tend to get pushed forward and down. Any thoughts?
I'm using SP jetfins BTW.

Make sure your fin tips are pointed straight BACK behind you instead of up. It really helps to have someone video tape you or do it in front of a mirror so you can see what you are doing. It can also help to have a buddy watch you and what your fins/fin tips are doing. Hope that helps some.

perhaps try it a little less forcefully? it's really not a big strong movement, it's like you're clapping the bottoms of your feet together.

but probably the best thing would be to find a mentor to help you. second best would be a video of you doing it and compare it to a 5thdx or gue video.

best of luck!

Nothing that we can say can really help you, without video. Why? Because people giving you suggestions without actually watching you kick doesn't do much good. Also, without seeing yourself kick, you don't actually know what you look like while kicking.

Thanks Jason and BD, I'll try those suggestions.
I realize the limitations of the question as it is. I was just hoping that the action was something commonly encountered with the kick. I was thinking that I was arching my legs too far back (like a bow). When I felt the best forward momentum it seemed they were a little too extended (like the flutterkick). Shrugs.
I/we don't have a WP video and my buddy was laughing too hard to be of any service (I'll describe more thoroughly what I should look like next time though). I tried to practice in the pool but my pool fins are splits and they didn't work worth beans. Was it just me or is this (non frog kick friendly) prone to splits?

Without seeing you in action it is difficult to asess your kicks. But....

The frog kick and the backward kick are very similar (the backward kick is essentially the frog in reverse). If you are not arching your back and keeping your head up during the power phase you will end up head.
