As some of you may know from this thread:
http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=106603

I have some problems with swimming without air. So finally when doctors allowed me to move after recently breaking a leg I went to the pool to do some training.

WARNING
Don't attempt to do these exercises by yourself. Make sure there is ALWAYS somebody watching you very closely.

I contacted one of my friends - diving instructor but also a freediver. So the major goal of this training is to let my body tolerating a higher amount of CO2.

So for the beginning we simply swam something like 150 meters (492 ft). After that I had to swim uw with one breath. The result was bad - only 18 meters (59 ft) - without fins.

After a short break on the way back it was even worse :(
So we moved to some static exercises. First - take a breath, lay on the surface with head in the water. 35 seconds. Bad. So another thing - 20 seconds - head uw. 35 sec of breathing. Again 20 sec uw, and then 30 sec of normal breathing. It went on down to only 10 sec interval on the surface. After that again as long as I can. And a surprise - I could do a whole minute!!!!

Then we switched to swimming with fins. I did 25 meters (82 ft). Then another exercise. 12,5 meters (41 ft) with fins, 8 deep breaths on the surface and again 12,5 meters. At each interval the number of breaths was smaller - down to just one breath. After that I was able to swim this 12,5 meters!!!!!

I know it's still a long way to my goal which is 50 meters (ft) but at least for this first day I could see the results almost immediately.

So i really enjoyed it. Pls keep your fingers crossed with my further training.

PS. - BTW tonight we are supposed to have in Warsaw minus 20 Centigrades (-4F). I hate winter!!!!!

I see that IANTD are doing freediving courses now. Look at their website.
This is something I always intended to do and never got round to. The set of skills that make up a freediver must help to make you a better SCUBA diver.
So in the meantime I compensate by repeating underwater lengths of the swimming baths. Better than nothing.
Last time I had a serious medical all my lung functions came out like I was 30 years younger, so this SCUBA diving has some extra benefits.
