I'm new to scuba but have been free diving and spearfishing for many years. Unfortunately, I don't have any secrets to pass on. The main thing that helps me is getting out regularly. I also use the health club pool to swim laps under water. Are you free diving mainly for the purpose of spearfishing or just for variety?

I'm just amazed on how long people can do down their one a single breath. I read something about experiance free divers being able to control their heart beat to an extent to stay down their longer.

I can't control my heartbeat through "mindpower" like some yoga master might be able to do (I have no knowledge whether they really can), but I can regulate it by controlling my activity level. Being very smooth, calm, and efficient burns less air and allows for longer hunting times. Observing a really good spearfisherman will probably give you a number of ideas. Then you need to try them yourself and see how your body reacts.

Scaliber, get in shape and get a mentor. Fall in with a couple of experienced spearos who do more freediving than Scuba. It takes at least one full season to become reasonably proficient.

Shop for some things. Get a frameless mask in black. Buy some long fins but go easy on blade stiffness. Start out with Sporasub or similar and stay away from the Cressi Gara boards. Purchase a plain rubber J snorkel with no weird valves and stuff which increase drag. Buy some soft booties to fit inside your foot fins. Get a slender killing knife. Visit hardware store and buy Wells Lamont "Jersey Hobnob" brown cotton gloves. Go to E Bay and start looking for a CO2 vest. The best, but unfortunately most expensive, (dam collectors) are the UDT type. Make sure it comes with spare ctgs as these can be hard to find. Alternate, US Divers snorkel vest with CO2. Start looking for a rubber (!) weight belt. Make a fish stringer by drilling a 3/32" hole in a 1/4" SS rod, 7" long. Attach string.

Work out regularly and try to stay in tune with the ocean.
