hey,

has anyone heard of Nine Foot Stake or Toppino Reef. I've heard they are locations where you CAN take fish. Within 6 miles from Key West. If anyone has GPS coordinates that would be awesome.

I'm planning on being in Key West during the 3rd week of March 09.

I'm new to this, so how realistic is it to be able to free dive and spear in ~25 ft of water?
I'm a pretty strong swimmer, and pretty comfortable in the water.

What is the etiquette for spearing when there are people around also in the water?
Obviously I'm not going to attempt to spear a fish 5 feet away from someone. I think these two locations are popular places for scuba and snorklers. So thats why I'm asking.

Also, side question...is it ok to take grunts?? I wouldn't do it with spear though, since they are so small. Are there regulations on size? Just curious because I heard they are really tasty, though small.

would need Florida fishing license..check with a local dive shop for size and take limitations.Bob at "Dive Key West' may be able to get you started and I believe they allow spearfishing on boat.

thanks. Yeah i knew about getting a fishing license. I'm just sort of looking for some input on the locations I mentioned. Is it a regular fishing license I have to get, or are there licenses for spearing? Also, does one need a special license for lobstering, other then a regular fishing license?

for lobsters you get a fishing license with a crawfish endorsement..I may be wrong ,but check with "Dive KEy West" about licensing. They may have a license for the boat that covers the divers too.No need for license then.
