Do I need a focus light with a YS-01 strobe? I just bought a G15 with fantesea housing and a nano focus light was included in the deal. I only have one arm on my tray and trying to decide since the ys-01 has a spotting light already if it will benefit me to buy a shoe mount to mount the focus light on top of the housing. I plan to shoot ttl only for now.

A focus light is almost always recommended. The issue with strobe spotting lights is for medium to wide angle shots they force you to point your strobe at your subject which can cause backscatter. A focus light can help avoid that. Not such a big issue for macro but still for quick focus light helps.

The nano focus light is next to be useless as it has a narrow beam and requires pointing at the subject
The focus light on the strobe is not strong either and requires you to aim at the subject

Buy a 100 degrees focus light so that you are in aim and forget mode

Which focus light do you recommend?

While the NanoFocus is a small light, since you already have it, why not get a mount for it and give it a try? I would get a ball mount, clamp and about a 4" arm to start. That will get it out over the port.

It's fine for close ups and if you point it straight on, that's where the camera shoots too! If you are using wide angle lenses and doing wider shots from further away, then a more powerful light makes sense. You can spend what you want to on a focus light, from $89 on up, depending on whether you want to use it as a video light.

There are several. I prefer one that can also work as spot light like the sola dive 800 so you don't need a torch on night dives
