Flying: What do you pack it in? I was thinking of a hard sided case like a Pelican but can't find one the right size without going huge.

I thought I could put the camera inside the housing and transport it that way but the case needs minimum inside deminsions of 10"x9"x8." (no strobes)

I thought such a case would be good for transporting the camera back and forth to boat as well and.

Suggestions very much appreciated.

Don

HI.

I just use my backpack and wrap it in a towel. For the plane ride, keep the camera in your carry-on luggage and leave the housing open to compensate for pressure differences.

At your destination, you should setup your camera in an air conditionned room and seal it there, this almost guarantees no condensation. Don't open it afterwards...

Never had any trouble with my C5050.

I'm not sure what housing you are using, but the Pelican 1510 is what I use for my C5050 in it's ikelite case, and I easily have room for my D125 strobe and a flock of ancillary stuff. (The camera always travels inside the housing:05: ) The listed internal dimensions are 20.2/11.4/7.5 inches, but you can try one with your housing at a local camera shop and see how it fits. The case is maximum size for airline carry-on, but those wheels and retractable pull handle make it easy to schlep around. The only problem might be weight, but so far no one has given me any hassle about this. (yet..:D ) Hope this helps. The 1510 is about 120-130 bucks online, and I use the padded divider option for the inside of the case. (which is a little more, I guess...) This lets me change things around, but the main divider only goes down the middle the long way, and really can't be shifted much. Oh well, that works for me. I hope this is of some use to you. Oh, and by the way, for travel to and from boats and such, I use a fold-up soft case. I use the camera/video bag from Armor, and this really works nice for me. It holds the camera with strobe in the main compartment, and has a bunch of outside cargo pockets which hold an incredible amount of stuff. This case has a padded grip AND a shoulder strap, and it has gone into boats and around town with me without giving any problem. It gets wet, and dries out nice, and will fold up and stick in a corner of my big Armor travel bag without complaint. I believe Larry at Scubatoys has this for about $30, which is a genuine steal:10: . I wouldn't travel my camera without it. Woody

I echo both comments. How's that for straddling the fence! ;)

I used to transport my camera rig in a Pelican case but got tired of the weight and rigidity of the box. I now pack it all in a backpack. The one I'm currently using is a wheeled McNett brand. Look for one that has a wide/deep base. Your case would fit easily. To give you and idea, this is what goes in mine....

Laptop and cords, mouse pad and wireless mouse
External USB hard drive
PT-15 - 5050 camera inside
Spare 5050
Inon D-180 strobe and FO cable
ULCS digital tray and 2 locline arms
focus light
WA lens, macro lens
four 8 battery sets
2 battery chargers
surge protector/extention cord,
cleaning kit (Small tool kit has to be in checked luggage because of screwdrivers :11:)
I also carry my mask and logbook in my carry on.

As for on the boat....take a collapsible drink cooler. I took my housing/stray/arm to WalMart to make sure I got one that it would fit in. It provides a padded carrying case to get to the boat and once there, it's your own rinse tank and storage to keep your camera cool. Just make sure not to let it sit in the sun...that water will get hot!

I also vote for the Pelican 1510. I travel to PNG for a month each year. I fit all my 5060 and Ike housing in it along with strobes, arms etc.... It has wheels and is a carry-on. My personal "bag" is max sized and fits on the box for easy rolling down the concourses. I don't check camera stuff if I can help it.

I too, have the Pelican 1510 and opted for the velcro insert over the pick n pluck. Got a great deal on it at a gun show.....much better than my LDS could do with my instructor discount.

We use small soft side coolers, to pack the u/w case. Works great, to carry on the boat also.

I have had great luck with a "Storm case" thinner side walls then the pelacan. integrated wheels and handle, very sturdy. we received some equipment in them and were so impredded we bought some for personnel use. good luck just my .02
