i'm looking for a fisheye lens for my 5D. any recommendations? i've found one for about $500 and then there's the L series for $1000. is it that much better?

I shoot with Nikon gear, but I really like the Tokina 10-17. It runs about $800. For me, the selling point was more flexibility with the zoom. Check out reviews on Wetpixel.

Have Fun,

Dan

I don't have a fisheye but I do have the 16-35mm f2.8L on my 5D. Before I got the 16-35, I used a 20mm. The difference between the 20mm and the 16mm is amazing. I am sure that the 15mm fisheye would be a great lens for diving. I know that the debate between primes and zooms could go on forever, but the flexibility of the zoom comes in very handy.

I have noticed some softness on the edges of pictures at 16mm and I think that is a problem with the 15mm fisheye as well. As long as you are aware of it, you can adjust for it though.

If you're using it underwater, I wouldn't bother with the L lens. The dome port will degrade the quality (especially around the edges) anyway with most extra-wide lenses. I'm cheap so I use a Russian Zenitar 16mm fisheye on my Rebel XT (about a 20mm equivalent on the 1.6 cropped sensor). I've never tried a "name-brand" fisheye lens on my camera underwater, but I honestly don't think I would be able to tell the difference in quality behind a dome port (which is really a poorly-aligned extra lens element).

i guess the main reason i would consider a l series lens is the speed for focusing. i feel like when you've got a subject in the viewfinder, you don't have a lot of time for the lens to get it i focus

I use a Canon 10-22mm on my Rebel, not a true fisheye but very versatile.

when I did a search for wide-angle fish-eye lens, I found that the most recomended was the new Canon EF-15MM 2.8 and that is what I bought for my 400d and I really like it.

Matt,

I see you're using the 5D. I'd back this advice. The 15mm fish eye is a nice bit of glass. The shots I posted on your other thread were taken with a 400D and the 10-22 which Dennis recommends.

Give me a minute and I'll dig out a couple of shots with the fish eye for you to check out...
