I got a Fisheye FIX G11 housing for Xmas. It has not been in the water yet, but in setting it up and checking it out I found that the controller wheel on the back - the one that turns the dial on the back of the G11 that changes the F-Stop setting when in Av mode - is apparently not making good contact with the dial on the camera. I turn the controller wheel and get intermittent change on the camera, sometimes turning the controller wheel a number of full rotations before the camera adjusts at all. The dial on the camera works fine out of the housing with no 'slippage' at all. My question - is anyone else seeing this behavior with their FIX G11 housing?

Press in on the wheel as it would be when the housing is under pressure and see if that helps.

Nemrod, I appreciate your pointing out the pressure difference when using it vs. my surface testing. It highlights the fact that the whole enclosure will be pressed together by the water pressure it is subjected to, not just on the controller wheel. I've pressed a little on the wheel itself while turning it but not squeezing on the closed body and also not very hard. I'll try to see if the other approach helps. If it doesn't I need to figure out if this is common design issue or if I happen to have a flawed unit, hence the question to others if they have seen it or not.

Just trying to help.

I notice that my FIX/S90 housing, that the rear control has less slippage when I squeeze the housing and control gland gently. You are right, the housing has more effect. My control works fine dry, just an occasional slip. Once I squeeze I gently the small occasional slip is gone. No, I don't think it should rotate on my camera or yours exactly like it would without the housing. In my case it is actually somewhat better in some respects, lol.

Since I don't have your housing, not knowing where you got it, I would get on the phone with them. Also, try squeezing the housing gently. These things have to be set to work under pressure.

I hope somebody can help you out, try a post over on Wetpixel.com :: Underwater Photography and Videography and see if that is more helpful to you.

Barry,

I just got my Fix s90 housing and I have the same problem with the rear wheel control: Sometimes the wheel would not turn at all, especially clockwise. Did you fix your problem? Can you please share how? When I squeeze the housing as Nemrod suggested it turns better, but it is not a solution.

Thanks

Is it common for housing manufacturers to design the housing a little 'loose' to accomodate for the adjustments underwater with pressure?

I'm sorry to hear about the problem with the FIX housing on the two Cannon cameras. I was considering buying the G11/FIX combo. Now I'm thinking about the G11 with an Ikelite housing.

Best of luck to the two of you. I hope it corrects itself underwater.

I don't need luck, my camera and housing work just fine, just as they are supposed to and are easy and fast to adjust underwater. But, if you want an Ikelite, good luck, they make nice housings that have their own set of problems as does the Canon OEM housings.

Yes, the shark is quite large. But, these bruisers happened by, mind if we join the party:

Take it easy.

I was referring to Barry and Victor who ARE having problems with their FIX housing.

I quoted you because of your comments on trying to create the affects underwater pressure.

So, is it common to have loose connections on a housing above water and then work fine underwater?

I don't believe they are having problems, they just think they are, simply my opinion, if you think the Ikelite is clear sailing, are you in for a surprise.

Never said that.

I'm still gathering information on several different rigs. Cannon, Nikon, FIX, Ikelite and others.

Not sure what I said to upset you, but thanks for your very helpful posts.
