i need help trying to i.d. a fish we saw in our canal the other day.

not much to go on really (sorry)

it was about 6-8 inches long, was on the surface like it was breathing air, had a wide head (sort of like a jawfish), i tried to get in the water to get a better look but it kept diving away. then a barracuda got it. it almost seemed like it was in trouble. after doing some research on the 'net, it looks like a jawfish, but i didn't think they came much off the bottom. i'm not good at fish i.d. and i know this is not a lot to go on.

i'll try to get back on this thread to check answers, but feel free to pm. i'm kinda new and haven't figured out all the neat features.
