The law can be very fussy about this. If you own the music and are not charging for the view then it is a fine line if you are violating the law. Besides they are all rich.

By now, I think most people know they are violating copyright. Everyone has their own opinion if it's ethically right or wrong. Youtube may mute your audio, but I have not heard of anyone getting sued for using copyright'd audio on a home video.

I hear what you are saying about the music, but i would like to get on a small soapbox for a moment. and this is directed at the music industry and not you:

videos like this are free advertising. free. i put this music in my video, and everyone who has seen it wants to know what the music is, and no less than 4 people that i know personally have downloaded this song. so that's $4 if revenue for the record company, and i have made .... let's see, lemme count, nothing!!! in fact i'm the one that did the work!!!

ok sorry to rant, but when youtube and facebook make you take off copyrighted music, it irritates me. and yes, i pay for all my music. the artists deserve to get paid for their work, i just think and hope that videos like this help them sell more music.

there. that felt good....

Couldn't agree more!

When I was first getting into video I had a friend who did an excellent 15 minute video and I really like the music he used. So i asked him and he told me the name of the album he used. So I bought the CD. I have now used the music a few times and guess what. Some people wanted to know the name of the CD, I told them, and they bought it. None of us would have bought the music just on our own. We did it because it goes with uw video. And all I ever do is make "trip videos" for me and my friends when we go on a trip. Never made a dime from them and never will.

So the bottom line for me is the artist/record company has made money from me and from others who have bought the cd and are not out a penny because of it. And I do give credit at the end of my video to the artist for the music.

I justify speeding too! There is right and there is wrong and if you want right I assume that is why we come here and ask what can be improved? Your video is up to you, but what if someone broke into your house stole your video and then said "He was helping you be seen more"??? You wouldn't buy it either!

The sad truth is some got slapped pretty hard "File Sharing" just a few years ago! As someone who goes the extra mile to make sure my work gets seen in public forums I compose or buy Copy Right Free Music! When people ask about someones music it is the music and not your video that drew their attention!

The sad part is it is up to the owner of the music to send a stop order! So it doesn't happen often! And as far as giving credit, its like saying the address of the person I stole the painting from! Don't credit unless you have permission! To ME it is saying "Hey folks here is who I stole from"!

So my question would be this. Exactly what are you allowed to do with music you buy? If I buy a CD and want to transfer that music to an iPod to listen to it that way is that OK? If that is OK, and maybe it's not, then what would be the practical difference between that and listening to that same music that I put on a DVD and listen to it as I watch my trip video which is on the same DVD?

Anyone's thoughts?

Sure, a lot of sites you down load music will only allow you to play it on the computer you down load it on! I may be disappointed that all art is not free, but the real world says it is not! The creator of the art has a right to it and its profits! If you read the beginning of a DVD it says you are licensed to view the contents not show for profit or an event that may lead to money being collected! You can't rent a seat in a movie theater and then show the film for free! So listing to music on a personal level is you paying for a license for personal use! The Happy Birthday Song can't be song or played in a restaurant because the owner sued and won! The use of music to enrich anyone but the artist is prohibited by law!

The funny thing to me is records, tapes, and CDs were played in a room, car, or Boom box and now with the IPod it is more personal and private! When you buy music you are not buying the rights to it only the license to listen!

I have to say the one of the only reasons I brought it up is the work here is good enough for public display and I would not want someone to miss out because they didn't go the extra mile! If the work was crap who would care?

I agree Papa Bear. There is some very good work on SB. Maybe it's time to start doing more narration to my videos but I have a real southern drawl. Or so I'm told. Maybe James Earl Jones is available if he's between movies. :D

There are a couple of old threads on the topic of copyright and music.

Funny thing is in hollywood where copyright costs are not a factor, they can choose any music they want because they can pay for it. It may be an original score or it may be a familiar song. Either way, they choose whatever they feel works best.

Many pure video hobbyists are the same and chose to take the chance online video sites will mute the audio or the record companies will sue them.

Some people do have some commercial exposure and are very concerned about it, making sure they get copyright or use non-copyright material.

I even get Model releases on everyone in my videos! It just becomes habit after a while and in the Resort or Boat videos people tend to take it more seriously if you have them sign! You also have to be careful of Brand names as well! I have been on working shoots where you carry masking tape in colors so you can blank out Brand names unless you have property releases! It gets crazy at times!
