if you're using a whole first stage you may as well just use the reg you are using normally as there is no advantage and you still have to maintain the first stage. For a pressure gauge you need a LP hose with some sort of pressure release mechanism, so it isn't cheap to maintain.

You want your pressure checker to be more accurate than your SPG, so a cheap gauge is not the way to go. Most scuba gauges are only accurate to +_100 psi. Higher end brass/glass gauges used by technical divers have 100psi increments and are a bit more accurate to +_50psi. Pressure gauges used as tank pressure checkers are typically accurate to +_25psi and are actually quite a bit cheaper than going the route you are going since they are standard hydraulic gauges. They suck less gas out of the tank because you don't have to fill the whole set with air, just a little bit with the fill adapter

SO
if you have din tanks and/or a din to yoke adapter

$40, can't argue with that

Cylinder Pressure Checkers
$45 for a yoke one there.

These are both cheaper than an SPG, you don't have any O-rings or hoses to deal with, The tank sides of them are just standard fill adapters with 1/4" NPT fittings, so other than the screw to bleed pressure there isn't much to go wrong. If something happens to the gauge, they are $15 to replace
