I am lookng for my first regulator. My LDS has the aqualung Legend for sale where if you buy the primary, you get the secondary for free. My question....Is this a good reg? Online opinion seems to be that it is fine. I dont want to just buy it b/c the sale is ending on June 30, but if it is really a great deal, I would like to jump on it. I think total would be around $350-400 Thanks

Not a bad choice by any means. A good rule of thumb when purchasing a regulator is to buy the best one that you can afford.

It is a decent reg. Some dive shops have gotten away from aqualung because of how they treat the shops but overall it is a great reg. I carry and suggest Salvo regs. They are easy to work on, treat divers and shops great, and is a great company and reg overall. They are very similar to dive rite regs. Are you getting a pressure gauge with that deal or just the first and two seconds? I can get you a Salvo reg for about the same deal with your choice of hose lengths.

Feanor, I would suggest an Apeks instead of Aqualung. See what kind of deal you can get on an ATX-50.

cant go wrong with aqualung, have one from the late 60s,always breathed nice, only reason i replaced was because there were only 2 low pressure ports, the price sound decent on the legend too.

They are good regulator. You won't be disappointed. Apeks are very good as well. I know several people with the Legend and I don't know of anyone that is disappointed with them.

I would highly suggest apeks. They are extremely simple and perform very well for whatever you will ever do from tropics to ice to caves and everything in between. You can also get they cheaply online.

The Legend is a very well made first stage although definitely I prefer the Adjustable LX second stages. Functionally speaking the Legend LX Supreme is virtually identical to the Apeks XTX200. If it were me, I'd buy the Legend LX Supreme for a variety of reasons.

Aqualung owns Apeks so dealer wise there is little difference - except that while all Aqualung dealers sell Aqualung regs, not all Aqualung dealers sell and stock parts for Apeks regs, so service is potentially slower to obtain on an Apeks reg.

With a smaller company like Salvo, Dive-Rite, Atomic, Zeagle, etc, service can get extremely interesting if you relocate to another part of the country or need service while you are on a dive trip. Both Aqualug and Scubapro have very wide ranging worldwide dealer networks and you can get service virtually anywhere. Plus it's a safe bet that Aqualung and Scubapro will both be around in 10 years and that they will still support and service a reg that you buy today. Other companies? I would not bet on it.

As for buying on-line, it's your decision, but the hidden costs, warranty problems, service issues and general ill will it breeds with the LDS you depend on for air far outstrips the upfront savings in very short order.

You will get all types of opinions and comments. I have the Legend and think it is an excellent regulator. It breaths easy, living in the northeast, we do a lot of cold water diving and it performs well.

Another vote from another New Jersey boy who's very happy with my Legend LX supreme set up. (Primary and alternate both)

Have dove (doved, dived, divved?) with the AquaLung in water down to 38deg in NJ and as warm as 80deg in HI. Been as deep as 110ft and the reg breathes just as easy no matter where you are or what position you're in.

I also considered the Atomic M1, but for the price difference (and that's BEFORE the free octo deal) sealed my decision for me.
