Arrived at my first OW class last wednesday to find that I was the only student in the class. No hiding in this class. I felt bad making the guy teach the course for just me but he explained it would be easier for both of us. I guess I'm getting a private lesson.

I had my first pool class last night. I passed the swim and float test but am painfully aware that I need to get in better shape. I was able to flood and clear my mask and take my mask off completely and clear no problem. I could also retrieve the regulator and clear well. My biggest problem was taking my integrated weight out of my BC and replacing it. Also had a problem reaching back to grab the regulator hose to retrieve that way.

Tough to fall asleep last night after all that excitement.

Yup...you have private lesson 1 to 1.

I did reach back with my left arm and lifted the tank. Tried that a couple of times before trying the normal retrieval - only to miss the first time and having to surface. My instructor said it might have been the new 7mm wetsuit I was wearing or that the tank was on my back a little low.

WOW! You were wearing a 7mil in the pool?

I don't know if your instructor would have allowed this during class, but in a real world situation remember that you have an Octo that you can switch to if you don't find your reg in the first try or two.

My instructor actually suggested just that Dragaon - that I grab my Octo next time. I wished everything went flawless but I was happy that I didn't freak out with a mask full of water. As far as the written test goes is there a certain score you need to pass? Naturally I'm going for the 100 but wanted to know if I needed a perfect score.

Raise your tank up a bit, you should be able to reach back and turn your tank valve on.

You don't need a perfect score on the exam, I know NAUI requires at least a 75%, not sure about the other agencies.

You did very well so you should be happy. My suggestion was just something else for you to try and keep in mind amid the other ton of stuff you're already trying to remember and keep straight right now. ;)

The written exam requires a 70 to pass if I remember correctly. It's multiple choice so just take your time with it and you'll do fine. Good luck.
