So what would you reccomend for a first light for a newby ?

I am currently a warmwater diver who does night dives when the opportunity arises and some very limited wreck entry. I am planning to dive in UK conditions and ulimately do wrecks here, when I have the skills and experience.

One of the main requiremnts I have initially for a light is that it must be travel friendly and relatively cheap.

Any advice ?

Cheers

the Surge by Prinston tec.

VERY bright, and very nice, its like a normal flashlight shape. if tou want one with a gripe i have the shockwave, and my dad has the shockwave 2. also get a strobe. prinston tec sells a combo that has a strobe (red l.e.d very nice) the surge, and the shockwave 2 for like $60 something.:) :)

btw i am also a newbie and i find these lights to work very well. Night diving is very fun. i saw an octopuss, crawling on the reef.:mean: :mean:

I've used it. It's inexpensive and reliable. Good light for the money.
Hated the pistol grip, though.

The princeton tec is a very nice light...excellentg value for the dollar. I have one as my back-up night dive light.

But if you are looking at possibly moving into wrecks, a good first light I would suggest is the HID that underwater kinetics(sp?) makes, this is my primary night dive light. They will run anywhere from 150 to 200, but it is an awesome light. It is also small and travel friendly, and once you get into wreck diving (I'm guessing a little here) it would be a good back up to the canister light you will likely have to get.
