Hi all,
Just wanted to post my review on my first 'real' Open Water dive;
Me and my wife just took up the hobby and got certified this summer
(Canada) we did our final certification dives in a lake with not much
visibility and few fish;
On our vacation to Cancun, we got a recommendation of from a friend to
check out Scorpio Divers. They are a small operation with very friendly people
who have a passion for diving.
Being our first time diving in the open water we were a little bit concerned
but our DM - Jorge alleviated that fear an assured us we would be fine.
To start us off we when to a shallow reef (30') 'Machones', with clear visibility >40ft
and no current; we brought wet suits with us but decided not to use b/c Jorge
advised us the water temperature was warm enough (he was right)
were down there for 35-40mins and we did not even feel cold.
This reef is a great reef for beginners alot of marine life and diversity
the coral was good but not as in good of shape as our next dives
Our highlights for this dive was, baby arrow crab, and a Huge (5-10 pound)
grouper getting cleaned at a brain coral.
After accessing out skills our next dives were a little more challenging
The weather was a bit windy this day and the water was a bit colder so we
decided to use our wet suits; Jorge informed us that b/c they were new
it would be a little difficult to get submerged (as the wet suite are very bouyant
when new - we did add more weight)
We when to 2 reefs; 'Punta Negra' and 'San Miguel' (40-50feet) and
there was a medium current running across the reef so we would have to
descend quickly to get cover behind the reefs. As predicted we did have some
trouble getting down but Jorge guided/helped us all the way and were able to get
shelter from the current in the reef. These reefs were much more alive in terms of
Coral; all different colors types and lots of life; as soon as we descended
we came across a school of Yellow tip tuna; and we saw sting rays, groupers, lobsters
rock fish but the highlight was a 5-6ft Nurse Shark and the chance to
catch a grouper preying on parrot fish !!!
Thanks to the Scorpio group for a great first OW experience
Cant wait to get back down
