I have now got almost all my basic dive stuff, but what about fins there seems to be so many about, i know i want fins with straps becouse i will need to use a dry suit living in the UK I'm a wimp when it comes to the cold. any ideas. whats the diiference between long and short fins sounds dumb but i need to ask thanks

xela-tess:
Just realised someone else has the same question

not sure where that is, but i thought i'd drop this link for you:

fin review

you may want to look through some other reviews at Rodale's as well
before making a decision.

enjoy!

no problem... i use mares quattros right now, and i'm very happy with
them. i have been thinking of switching to apollos, though...

I have used both Scubapro XL jet fins, Mares Plana Avantis and Aqualung Blades with my dry suit. All have large and foot pockets (they get larger in that order) and the Mares and Aqualung fins in question also have very wide footpockets.

Of the three I prefer the Plana Avantis with my drysuit and the Scubapro Jet fins with my semi-dry.

As a point of reference, H2Andy - Rodales is notorious, and not respected around here, for their absolute lack of consistency and apparent lack of credibility. A fin or regulator can go from the bottom of the heap to the top from year to year, even though they made no changes whatsoever. Rodales is a joke.

And for what it's worth - Quattro's and Jets (Turtles, actually - size 12 feet.) But I'm thinking of ebaying the Quattro's.

I have the Turtles XXL. They're basically the same as the Jet Fins, only with a bigger foot pocket. Now, Scubapro is coming out with XXL Jet Fins. I still have a pair of Quatros that I use when I dive wet. Used to love them. Now, I don't.

The really long fins are for free diving and really not recommended for scuba.

IDI is out of business (isn't it?) So turtles are not an option and you'd have to go with Jet Fins if you want to go that route.

I never liked the quattros much and preferred the older avantis as they were a little stiffer and also felt a little better with a frog kick.

Xela-tess your best bet is to try a few out in the water before you decide as a lot of it comes down to personal opinon. Many of the fins mentioned above are more or less power fins and they work well if you have the legs for it but won't make you happy if you don't.

DA Aquamaster is correct but you can still find the Turtles if you look, 123scuba.com has Turtles in stock if you need them, at $79.99 not a bad price either. Of course then you'll be like the rest of us Turtle-users, hosed if you lose a fin. It doesn't look like they'll be available in years to come.
