You have a loop tied in the end, right? The way I do it is to run the line through a hole on the edge of the spool, and across so that it ends near the edge of the spool, and is aligned with another hole. Clip a double ender through the loop and the spool, with the gate facing the spool, so the little thing you push on is closest and facing the line. Harder for it to get opened accidentily that way.

I started using it like that after having it come unclipped while swimming from a dock to a bouy in Hudson Grotto....all 80 feet of my line deployed....it was kind of funny in hindsight, though. I'm glad it was tied on the spool at the end, too!

How do you keep a finger spool from unspooling during storage and use using a double ender?

By keeping the finger spool in my drysuit pocket.

Seriously, this webpage has some good info.

Bolt Snap Orientation on Reels

And yes, clipping the double-ender outward does increase the chance of it "self opening" and coming off the spool. But I've yet to have any problems with it this way, as long as the line is tight and keeps the double-ender from moving too much.

Also, if you have too much line on the spool, it's difficult to keep the double ender from popping off. In that case you may need to run more line on one side of the spool near the very end so you have room to clip the double ender, or just cut some line off so it is not an issue all the time.

Also make sure the loop is pulled really taut before clipping with the bolt snap, if its loose it can float over the side of the spool and then unwind that way.
