I get to dive. I certified Sep 2009 - but no physician would sign my PADI medical form ---- until this past week. I finally met with a cardiologist who also is a diver and he took all my rest results, pieced them together and stated that "I do not see any cardiac contraindication for scuba diving".

So, now I'm off to Mexico, Mayan Riviera for a week. We'll be staying about 20 minutes south of Playa del Carmen. I am planning to take my snorkel and facemask as I do not yet own any other gear (save for fins and gloves).
I am looking for any and all advice that will fast track my diving experiece while away.
Where to dive, with what org., should I buy a regulator??? any advice at all.

I am a "fit" 65 year old widower male, looking forward to swimming in warmer waters (compared to our water here in Atlantic Canada).

Enjoy. Seems hard to believe you were fit and safe enough to earn your certification, but not to dive. Have a great trip.

Looking back it shows an "attitude" on the part of the doctors. The last Cardiologist looked at "all of my reports" over the past years and was able to put the pieces of the puzzle together.

The moral of the story - we are all our own best doctor and never take the first opinion from a bunch of government paid doctors. My fortune was in that we had a private clinic open up and I found an interested doctor. It did not hurt that he is a very experienced diver.

My "Advanced Open Water" Cert card is in the mail. I'm a far cry from not able to dive status to AOW. Of course this cold water diving is more challenging that the warm waters of Akumel Bay and Cozumel - but still very exciting.

Now to get my oldest son and his two oldest sons certified and into the water with me.
