My son and I had our first lesson last night. Lessons were purcgased for christmas and we've been waiting to start ever since.
Had an classroom session at the dive shop for about an hour and wrote a short quiz.
We then went down to the Aquatic center a little after 8:00 until about 10:00
Set up the gear, put it in the water and then got in the pool and put it all on.
We stayed in the shallow end learning the basics. I managed to suck a little water in through my nose and had a coughing fit. I could see that the instructor was just waiting for me to panic and surface to breathe. I just kept coughing through the regulator until my throat cleared (seemed like forever). There was no way I was going to give my kid the satisfaction of being able to tease dear old Dad.
After that we swam down into the deep end and swam around for the balance of the time.
After having read a million posts on this board, I thought I had a decent expectation of what it might be like. WRONG!
No wonder you people are such fanatics about the sport!
I was in total amazement at the feeling of weightlessness and breathing underwater. Nothing I had read or heard could have prepared me for that.
My son did really well. No fear, no problem sinking. He just swam down to the bottom and tooled around the bottom of the pool with me and he couldn't stop grinning the whole time.
We live 40 miles from the city, so on the long drive back home we couldn't stop talking about the experience and couldn't get the smiles off our faces. Without a doubt, it was one of our single best experiences. Still couldn't wash the ear to ear grin off the faces the next morning. It's going to be a long week until next Sunday when the next class takes place.
The pool just isn't big enough or deep enough or the time spent under water isn't long enough. Not complaining though, I'll take the pool anytime over work. Can just imagine what it's like in open water. Bet I'll be wrong again and it'll be even better than my expectations.

Right on - sounds just like me and my family on Monday night - except we get to go back tonight! All this excitement just for a pool - can't wait for the "real" thing on the 18th!

WOW
A good story, The smile on the face's reminds me about the day I got my c-card, then the first day I did a boat dive ,then the ocean, then on and on!
It is a great sport to get hooked on the zero gravity, the marine life, the history on the ship wrecks and on and on!
Yuo guys enjoy and good luck!
Dive safe,
Brad

very cool!! reminds me of when I got cirtified with my dad years ago. the first pool dive is great i will never forget it just wait till you get out of the pool you and your son will be blown away. Congradulations on the start of you diving and adiction. Stay safe and have fun!!

WONDERFUL....Yep...wait till you do an open water dive...Your grin will wrap around your head:)

You guys must be diving with George from The Diving Center. They are a great LDS and I've bought a lot from them because they have competitive prices. The great thing about diving is that you and your son can do it together for a long time. I'm glad you had such a terrific start to your diving career.

Welcome to our world there my friend! The thrills will never stop coming! So many places to dive and so little time! Just savor each experience, and log, log, log!

Welcome to the world of scuba addiction. I still remember my first night in the pool. I was so wired up about it that I stayed up till almost 4am. Its not surprising that humans are so enthralled with being underwater, as it is where we came from originally (if you believe in that theory anyway). As other posters have said, it just keeps getting better and better. Your first open water dive will floor you. Then your first ocean dive will level you. I'll never forget my first ocean dive. We moored about 2 miles offshore over a 180ft freighter. As soon as I was in the water and about to begin my descent, I ducked my mask under water to check things out. The shipwreck was 90 feet down, and I could see it plain as day.....fellow divers waving me to hurry up and get down there. It was awesome. Then theres the first dive at Cozumel...Oh My God!!!! Cozumel is God's personal aquarium.

Oh, and you did great coughing through your reg when you aspirated a little water. It shows that your able to stay calm and deal with situations underwater without panicking. Thats a sign of a good diver. Good luck to you and your son. Sounds like your both going to do well, and really enjoy the sport.

You're right Dennis. Manfred Is instructing, also had a second assistant, but in my excitement I have forgotten his name. 2 Instuctors and 5 students. Good ratio!
Goerge and the crew have been fantastic at answering all my questions and providing assistance. I know I'm going to drop more dollars there yet. I think they know it too.
