Fin fit -- fine?

How snug do open-heel fins need to be? I have silly skinny feet, and most of the booties in the shops here (Singapore) are lightweight tropical ones, so most open-heel fins seem enormous -- I could store a safety sausage in one and a torch in the other, alongside my feet. That's plainly ridiculous, but it is going to be okay to have some empty space down the sides of the pockets?
