My husband & I stayed 11 days during the off season (September) & found the FA to be perfect for our needs. We were lookng for a quiet, clean room near a good dive shop and thats exactly what we got. We read that the ocean views are from the higher rooms so asked to be moved & it was no problem at all. The rooms are quite nice- all marble floors & walls. Beds were firm as most are in Mexico. Water was always hot with good pressure & the a/c kept us cool. The room was very thoroughly cleaned every day, even the floors which must have been tough considering we were always dragging in sand & dripping wetsuits (the little "sweet dreams" chocolates on the pillows were a nice touch). TV worked fine when we needed it. Room service was pricey but isn't it always? The front desk was helpful & friendly. The gift shop had the little things we needed like bottled water & cigarettes-- it is not run by the hotel so you cant charge items to your room. We didnt stay all-inclusive because we wanted to enjoy the local food (great breakfast at Jeannie's Waffle House, recommend The Mission for dinner, and Panchos Backyard also). The beach area seemed a little small but we didnt spend time there anyway. We rented a bright purple vw bug and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the entire island. DIVING: the shop across the street, Dive House, was great. Nice relaxed diving, easygoing but attentive divemaster, freindly helpful staff, took us to all the best sites, boat was never crowded (several times just us). Also recommend Living Underwater for advanced diving like Punta Sur-- they'll pick you up at the dock, HP steel tanks, small fast boat, personal service.

I have a trip booked for the last week in March. I have been given different information concerning the snorkling at this resort. Can someone give me a report if you can snorkle there?

Thanks,

Yep, just put on your fins, mask and snorkel and get in the water. No one will stop you! Stayed at Fiesta Americana 3 times in 2004...Have a great time!

My wife and I stayed at Fiesta Americana for a short trip just this past week and we had a wonderful time. It was our first trip to Coz. When we return to Coz, we'll likely return to FA.

The rooms were clean and spacious, and the FA staff was helpful and friendly.

We ate breakfast and lunch on the property every day before and after our diving. Every night, we went into town for dinner.

I'd recommend to others to do the same. Breakfast and lunch on the property before and after diving was simply convenient. The restaurants for dinner that we went to in town were quite good.

We dove with Christi's operation, Blue XT Sea Diving, and had loads of fun. When we return to Coz, we will hope to book our diving with her again.

We did not snorkel, but I saw plenty of people snorkeling from the property.

I plan to write a complete trip report when I have some more time.

Michael

WHAT, you got chocolates? They must have been holding out on us because we didn't get chocolates and I did tip the maid.

This isn't a complaint, we had a great time there. I'm just surprised about the chocolates :11:

The short answer is Yes.

I took my daughter out snorkeling a couple of times when we were there. First time I actually used a snorkel :11: , something I usually reserve for cleaning my pool. It was during a Norté so there was some current (north to south) so staying right in front of the beach area was a little work. If that was to happen again, I would walk a short distance up the road and get in the water at Dzul Ha, which is known for being a good shore snorkel spot. Then you could drift snorkel back down to the Fiesta Americana and exit the water.

Second time we went out, I rented a tank from Divehouse and left my snorkel back in the room. I have a 7 ft hose on my octo so my daughter used that while I used the primary. We stayed on the surface the whole time while we paddled around. Hardly any current this time, so it was not a lot of work to stay near the beach entrance. While there isn't a lot of rock structure directly in front of the resort, there still was plenty to see. We spent an hour doing my version of "sassy" and only stopped because we got hungry. I wish I had taken my camera with me.

I was talking to another diver who told me that the diving just to the south of the pier in front of Divehouse was, good, shallow (~20 ft), and had no current. It would probably be good for snorkeling too, but you'd need to wear booties walking over the ironshore to enter the water.

Hope this helps,

There is very nice snorkeling at the FA pier, but I would agree with the other comment about watching for currents. My family and I snorkeled there in April a couple of years ago, and it was wonderful - calm, lots of fish, and we even saw an eagle ray from a distance. However, last year in October was a different story. On my last morning in Coz, not being able to dive, I paddled out from the pier (stupidly, without fins or booties), and in less time than it takes to write this, I was 100 yards downstream. I swam as hard as I could against the current trying to get back, but it was no use. I ended up exiting the water on the razor sharp dead coral south of the FA beach. I not only cut the soles of my feet, but stepped on a black sea urchin to boot! My big toe swelled up like a grapefruit. I've still got a little black mark from the spine in my toe as a souvenir. A very unpleasant ending to a fabulous trip. It's a great place to snorkel - just check for currents to make sure you can back out of the water on the ladder at the pier.

As past posts have recommended, walk 500 metres north to Dzul Ha Beach and enter near the pier. Swim out past the pier and snorkel back to the FA. We did this twice on our trip and the fish life was much better around Dzul Ha than the FA. Just avoid all the boat traffic in that area, especially those damn catamarans that drop off 50 snorkellers in the water at once.
