I don’t often do trip reports anymore because I rarely feel I have anything significant to add to what has already been written. But this was my first Cozumel AI experience so I decided I might share some of my thoughts and tips. Plus I haven’t dove Cozumel or Tres Pelicanos for several years so I thought an update might be due.
Having stayed in town every other trip we decided to change it up a bit and stay at an AI south of town. I admit I was hoping for something a little more relaxing (and no hawkers). I did a bit of research, mostly on SB, and decided on Fiesta Americana. I chose this one for several reasons but primarily because it had mostly good reviews and a pier where my dive op could pick us up. We booked through Travelocity because I had a coupon I needed to redeem. Overall we were very pleased.
We arrived in Cozumel via Atlanta with Delta. The flight went smoothly and we actually arrived a bit early. The line at Customs was long since several flights arrived at roughly the same time and they only had 2 booths open. We finally made it through, picked up our luggage and caught the shuttle (16 dollars for Eric and I) to the Tres Pelicanos office to check in and drop off some of our gear. Next we caught a taxi to Fiesta Americana. Per usual the driver quoted a high price and I negotiated but still payed too much (15 dollars).
Check in went smoothly and we had a room on the 7th floor. I do wish we received more info on the resort options and events. Most of what I discovered was by roaming around the resort plus trial and error. We took the only current elevator to the sixth, walked down the hall and then a flight of stairs to 7. They are in the process of adding another elevator on that end and there was considerable noise from construction that day only. They are remodeling the private ground floor pools as well so the rooms above those had jackhammer noise to deal with for several days.
We quickly fell into a routine of room service breakfast (more on this later), suiting up and heading to the pier where 3P’s would arrive between 8 and 8:10. We headed south each day for the first dive then a bit closer to the marina for the second shallower dive. We were back at the resort by 12:30. For lunch we had 3 options each day, Cervicheria, The Grill or the buffet at Vina del Mar. The buffet was usually good but the shrimp tacos at Cervicheria were fantastic (ask for the sauce on the side). Then the afternoon was spent on the “beach.” There are beds over the water, loungers, canopy beds and hammocks. The beds were the most popular but we were able to get one of the canopied beds each day where we would spend the afternoon.
Dinner is at one of the restaurants, Rosato (Italian), Peninsula (Asian), and El Mexicano. Our favorite meal was the Fillet at Rosato as well our favorite dessert, Chocolato (chocolate soufflé ). The restaurants alternate days closing one day a week and reservations can be made on their website. It took us a few days to learn this and once someone showed us it made it so much easier. Room service is available 24/7 but was also our worst meals (breakfast).
The Coffee Corner has a variety of mini desserts and serves a limited selection of sandwiches.
There is also a Sushi Bar but like the 3 dinner restaurants it is not open every day.
I can’t say enough good things about the staff. 10+ and sincerely seemed to enjoy their work and wanted to make our stay fantastic.
While we were there it was primarily adults with a few scattered families. Lots of alcohol but except for one notable exception everyone was polite.
