I don’t often do trip reports anymore because I rarely feel I have anything significant to add to what has already been written. But this was my first Cozumel AI experience so I decided I might share some of my thoughts and tips. Plus I haven’t dove Cozumel or Tres Pelicanos for several years so I thought an update might be due.

Having stayed in town every other trip we decided to change it up a bit and stay at an AI south of town. I admit I was hoping for something a little more relaxing (and no hawkers). I did a bit of research, mostly on SB, and decided on Fiesta Americana. I chose this one for several reasons but primarily because it had mostly good reviews and a pier where my dive op could pick us up. We booked through Travelocity because I had a coupon I needed to redeem. Overall we were very pleased.

We arrived in Cozumel via Atlanta with Delta. The flight went smoothly and we actually arrived a bit early. The line at Customs was long since several flights arrived at roughly the same time and they only had 2 booths open. We finally made it through, picked up our luggage and caught the shuttle (16 dollars for Eric and I) to the Tres Pelicanos office to check in and drop off some of our gear. Next we caught a taxi to Fiesta Americana. Per usual the driver quoted a high price and I negotiated but still payed too much (15 dollars).

Check in went smoothly and we had a room on the 7th floor. I do wish we received more info on the resort options and events. Most of what I discovered was by roaming around the resort plus trial and error. We took the only current elevator to the sixth, walked down the hall and then a flight of stairs to 7. They are in the process of adding another elevator on that end and there was considerable noise from construction that day only. They are remodeling the private ground floor pools as well so the rooms above those had jackhammer noise to deal with for several days.

We quickly fell into a routine of room service breakfast (more on this later), suiting up and heading to the pier where 3P’s would arrive between 8 and 8:10. We headed south each day for the first dive then a bit closer to the marina for the second shallower dive. We were back at the resort by 12:30. For lunch we had 3 options each day, Cervicheria, The Grill or the buffet at Vina del Mar. The buffet was usually good but the shrimp tacos at Cervicheria were fantastic (ask for the sauce on the side). Then the afternoon was spent on the “beach.” There are beds over the water, loungers, canopy beds and hammocks. The beds were the most popular but we were able to get one of the canopied beds each day where we would spend the afternoon.

Dinner is at one of the restaurants, Rosato (Italian), Peninsula (Asian), and El Mexicano. Our favorite meal was the Fillet at Rosato as well our favorite dessert, Chocolato (chocolate soufflé ). The restaurants alternate days closing one day a week and reservations can be made on their website. It took us a few days to learn this and once someone showed us it made it so much easier. Room service is available 24/7 but was also our worst meals (breakfast).

The Coffee Corner has a variety of mini desserts and serves a limited selection of sandwiches.

There is also a Sushi Bar but like the 3 dinner restaurants it is not open every day.

I can’t say enough good things about the staff. 10+ and sincerely seemed to enjoy their work and wanted to make our stay fantastic.

While we were there it was primarily adults with a few scattered families. Lots of alcohol but except for one notable exception everyone was polite.

Some other observations/tips…

*Onsite pier is free to use
*Taxi to and from town is 10 dollars and to airport 20 dollars/400 pesos.
*Breakfast is at the buffet Vina del Mar, much better than room service
*There is a poolside event each evening. We had local dancers, a magician, superbowl party, casino night (fake money), karaoke and live music.
*Evenings are noisy, even up to the 7th floor but entertainment ends at 10pm
*There is no sandy beach into the water. However there are several sets of stairs that lead to the water. Lots of towels available at pool and beach area.
*Don’t leave your table/plates unattended at the buffet. Birds will get to it!
*Our room had a large air freshener and the smell was overwhelming to us. We unplugged it.
*The entrance to El Mexicano and Rosato restaurants are listed as third floor and technically correct but you get there from a short set of steps from the main floor that only go to those two restaurants.
*I found a laundry room that is available to guests on the 4th floor.
*This is an older building with an indifferent painter. Some worn finishes.
*There is a road between the resort and ocean but it is not a main road and lightly travelled
*Ice is available from room service or at the bars.
*Bring lots of small bills but we were able to get change for twenties at the bars or Cervicheria
*Each morning the south end of 7th floor has a Nespresso coffee machine with pods and milk, sugar, etc, juice, teas and sweets. It was available some evenings as well.

Diving. What can I say, we love diving with Tres Pelicanos, our favorite dive shop on island. We had a really good group for much of my trip including Trailboss123, Hi Greg! Weather was beautiful all my days with no port closings though they did restrict far south dives one day. We did two tank morning dives each day, al 80’s with N36. The fills were always good and analyzed 35 to 36. One reason we love this op is the personal approach of the owner Steve (manta_man) and the family feel we get there. Plus the fact that they have a lot of repeat customers that are comfortable and familiar with drifting Cozumel and allow us to dive our tanks rather than all ascend as a group. Shortest dive was 68 minutes and longest at 80.

The crew was fantastic. On time to the pier each day with my tank rigged and ready, even weights after the first day. And between dives they had me switched and ready to go in moments. Their covered boat, the Skinny Shark, is wide and fast with plenty of leg room. Wet storage under bench with netting suspended overhead for dry. Surface interval snacks usually included a fruit and cake/cookie option. After the last dive you pack the gear that returns to the shop in the supplied duffle. Next day it’s back on the boat and ready.

And while it doesn’t compare to distant dive locales, it was some of the best diving still available in the Caribbean. Dramatic structures with swim throughs, soft corals, sponges and still some hard coral. The most color we have seen in the past several Caribbean trips.

I think I was actually on the skinny shark sitting across from you on the last day on my trip, Friday 2/7. I was sitting next to Trailboss. You had the camo wetsuits?

OMG! That was us! Sorry we didn’t get to be more social that day. It was our first day and still getting sorted out plus Eric had to whip his pony during the SI.

Well I'm reading your trip report and I was interested in it because Tres Pelicanos is my dive shop. I was thinking well you must have started your trip after I left. Then more details are coming out and I'm thinking wait a minute, I dove 2 days with @trailboss. Then I thought that must have been you.

It is not unusual with 3P to be on the boat with repeat customers with a lot of experience.

The first time we showed up in those suits (@MAKO Spearguns) Steve was on board and started calling us his turkey hunters. I told him that he best be careful then. :D

There was another SB couple on board during our trip and loved diving with Jeff and Laurie but I don’t know there user names. Would love to give them a shout out too.

With suits like those you should be contributing to the lionfish cerviche. Although when Steve and Gary @gopbroek are around there is no shortage of lionfish.
