i was wondering if its alright to feed the fishes when diving, i know your not suppose to feed wildlife in general but i was wondering if sea critters fall under this category too.

i find sometimes i cant help but feed the fishies..... boats just do that to me

seriously, ive seen divers kill and break open sea urchins for the blue gropers (yes, we pronouce it that way) and i hate it.

sometimes i take stale bread with me on a dive but its rare

I've done Cheez Whiz a few times many years ago (and they love it), but, it does get a bit old after a few times. That and I got tired of wasting a pocket for it.... However, I have never broken up (killed) anything UW to feed something else UW. Never will.

I've seen posts in here-- never done it myself-- of people busting up Zebra Muscles (which don't belong) and feeding them to fish. I haven't done it, but I don't have a problem with it. These animals don't belong and are a huge burden on the environments they are in.

I'd rather feed an urchin to the fish than bread or cheese. Fish eat either some kind of sea-meat, plants, or both... carbs and dairy should not be in their diet no matter how much they like them. :)

Now, if every diver busted up wildlife to feed to other wildlife, that would be bad. But as a rare thing, I reckon it's better for the ecosystem than bringing down the wonder bread.

I have fed fish in a spring vienna sausages they loved it. I guess it depends on the situation you are in and where you are.

During my AOW in Malta my instructor did that at the end of a deep dive. :(

I don't have a big problem with some people doing it once in awhile, if you really must, whatever. If everyone did it all the time maybe it gets to be a problem especially where there's a lot of divers.

But, if you're going to do it I think you should understand what is ok. Cheeze whiz and vienna sausages are hardly part of any fishes natural diet and I don't think stuff like that should be fed. Just because the fish like it doesn't mean it's good for them. As far as killing something else for feeding, if it's really some invasive species or something that's gotten way out of control in an area maybe that's not so bad. But make sure you know that's really the case now, not how it was 10 years ago, or something you just saw done by some DM that didn't actually know either.
