Anytime you ask for opinions on hunting equipment, it really needs more info on what type of diving you normally do. Rec diver, spearo, bug hunter, photog, divemaster, etc, etc.
It's really best for you to read how several different types of divers dive, and then see how they lionfish hunt as it works for them(but maybe not others)
So I'll tell you how I dive and hunt lionfish. 1st off they are a secondary priority for me when I dive. If it's a slow dive and not slaying anything, I'll poke a couple and bring them up if they are sizable{eatable}. Other times I may just stab them and leave them in the sand for other fish to find later, I never hand feed fish.
Here's where I'll get flamed. I like the LionTamer from Emerald Charters. I like it because it attaches to my speargun easily and I can both grab it and stow it quickly without having to carry it separately. I carry to much stuff already. I also like it because Lionfish tend to clump together and with it's non-barb'd point, I can shoot, snip and reload quicker than any other device on the market. Any spearo will tell you reload time is a key factor to your cooler being filled. When I say snip, I have a pair of EMT shears that I use and just snip the fish right in back of the eyes to brain it, then do the spines if I'm keeping it. It's by far the fastest, safest, and non- bulky way to get a bunch of them to the surface.
So if all you want to do is kill them, then a 3 prong tip is great. If you want to bring them up and make ceviche, then get a liontamer. Aim for the head so you don't ruin the nice eating flesh. You can always load 3 bands on a 54 inch Biller, let the steel fly and see if you can nail a 2-fer with a single shot.
