My wife and I found that if we ventured off of the main tourist areas in Cozumel, we could found some GREAT authentic Mexican restaurants.

A couple of our favorites were Otate's and El Folko. I no longer remember the street names, but both of these were EXCELLENT.

Otate's was all outdoors and seemed to serve mainly locals. They had great bean soup and other delicious items.

El Folko was a little closer to downtown and seemed to cater to both tourists and locals.

On the touristy side in terms of price and menu items, we enjoyed breakfasts and desserts at Rock N' Java. It looks out over the Naval Base just south of San Miguel.

Our first trip to Cozumel was to the all-inclusive Scuba Club Cozumel. I loved the place and the food was good. However, our second trip was not to an all-inclusive, and I think I'd have a hard time passing up places like Otate's and El Folko to stay at an all-inclusive again.

What are some of YOUR favorite restaurants?

I think you mean El Foco just off from Rosado Salas on Av 5. Otate's is on Av. 15 about a half block south of Rosado Salas.

I know it's on the main strip, but still quite a bit of fun: Carlos and Charlies.

You are kidding right?

Too many to mention, but 2 I absolutely love are Sonhora Grill and Galivanes, The atmosphere and food is AWESOME

My thoughts exactly!

With all the good restaurants on the island, I just don't get it.

Though I did go there for a Bachelor party my 1st time visiting... so I am guilty of going there. At least it was at the old location, not the super mall.

Please do yourselves a HUGE favor and use the search function if you are looking for good places to eat. This topic has been rehashed ad nauseam so with a tiny bit of effort you can find a LOT of good advice out there.

Carols & Charley's...?! :silly:

I followed my group to 6 different dinner restaraunts when I was there for a week last January, and there was only one I really liked, yet - Alcina discribeds it better than I could in her report...
La Mission – 30 Av. (also called Av. Pedro Joaquin Coldwell) Between Calle 2 & 4 Nte.
This was one of only two "explorations" off the main drag we did. The first exploration was a bust because the restaurant we were searching for was closed when we arrived! DH was not happy. This time we headed out with a couple we had met on the dive boat. Very inexpensive, good service, friendly atmosphere. We ate here twice and both times the other customers were all locals. The food was very good – pork tacos and grilled shrimp. Portions were good sized and they have a salsa bar thing where you can load up with a variety of salsas and sides…try the green bean concoction, scrumptious on the pork tacos. My mouth is watering just remembering! Very good coconut ice cream in a massive portion. Sit by the patio doors to enjoy the breeze & the huge mural in the outdoor courtyard.

I'm glad you started this thread. Sure, searches are easy, but - business change a lot from year to year, operators, hotels, and cafes, so it's good to see current remarks. I'll be watching this thread for additional comments before I go back in March! :shades:

El Capi Navigante
Sonora
Los Gavianes (sp?)
Santiago's (when it's open)
El Moro
La Perlita
La Choza
Pancho's Backyard
Prima
Casa Denis
Los Moros del Morritos
La Morena
La Cabana del Pescador (aka the Lobster House)
Chen Rio
Paradise Cafe (aka Bob's Marley Bar)
Palmeras*

*I hope my inclusion of this one doesn't invalidate the rest of my list. Despite its Denny's style menu and the fact that is possibly the most touristy eatery on the island, their broiled octopus (not on the menu, but ask) is some of the best I have had anywhere. It's a great "people watching" spot, too.
